You now know how important it is to properly cleanse and care for your skin with the right facial creams. But is this enough? Exfoliating the skin brings many benefits and is therefore definitely worth adding to your skin care routine. Exfoliating the skin is a technique in which the old skin cells are removed. Do these terms sound completely new to you? No worries, scroll down and we'll tell you everything you need to know about exfoliating your skin.
Exfoliating or peeling the skin is a way to remove dead skin cells from the top layer of skin. This is not to be confused with scrubbing. While exfoliating the skin you also remove dead skin cells, but then you remove the product from your skin. While exfoliating the skin, you apply a product to the skin that stays put and does the work for you. The skin is renewed and the permeability of the skin is increased. This allows your skin to better absorb care products such as a face cream. This technique is often used in beauty salons, but with today's technology you can now easily exfoliate your skin at home!
There are different exfoliants, each with their own specific effect. We have listed the different types of exfoliants for you.
In addition to your skin being renewed and being able to absorb care products more effectively, exfoliating the skin also has other benefits. As mentioned earlier, there are different exfoliants. It is important that you choose an exfoliant that works effectively for your specific skin problem.
Reduces wrinkles
Because the skin is renewed, peeling the skin also has a positive effect on older skin, wrinkles are reduced. The AHA exfoliant is an effective exfoliant that helps reduce wrinkles. The AHAs consist of various natural acids including lactic acid, glycolic acid and citric acid. The acids help remove dead skin cells, revealing new young skin. In addition, Retinoid is also an effective exfoliant against wrinkles. Retinoid promotes collagen production of the skin, which strengthens the skin and reduces wrinkles.
Improves acne-prone skin
Do you suffer from acne? Even then exfoliation can be a solution. If you suffer from acne, a BHA exfoliant is recommended. The BHA exfoliant prevents clogging of the pores and prevents them from turning into pimples or blackheads.
Helps against sun damage
Is your skin damaged by the sun? That is of course very annoying. When your skin is damaged by the sun, the skin is often very dehydrated and it is best to use an AHA exfoliant. The AHA exfoliant improves the skin's moisture balance and sun damage is reduced.
Reduces pigment spots, red spots and scars
Everyone naturally wants a beautiful smooth skin, unfortunately this is not obvious. If you suffer from pigment spots, red spots or scars, an AHA exfoliant is your lifesaver. The AHA exfoliant consists of different acids, which peels off the top (aged) layer of the skin. The young (new) skin then comes to lie on the skin surface. The skin is thus renewed, which ensures that scars and blemishes are a thing of the past.
Before you start peeling your skin, it is good to know that sometimes you have to be patient. To start with, it is important that you choose a product that contains the exfoliant that suits your skin problem. However, you never know how your skin will react to an exfoliant. It is therefore quite possible that you have chosen an exfoliant that is too strong for your skin and that you have to switch to a milder variant or that you have to exfoliate your skin less often.
Do you know that you have sensitive skin? Then start with a mild exfoliant and gradually build up the exfoliation. For example, start by exfoliating the skin twice a week in the evening. Is this going well? Then you can build further.
Do you have normal skin? Then you can start exfoliating the skin almost immediately. Choose an exfoliant with a medium acidity and use the exfoliant in the evening before going to sleep. Do you notice that your skin turns red? Then use the exfoliant less often. If it goes well you can choose to build up the exfoliation further and opt for a stronger exfoliant.
It is important that you keep moisturizing the skin well during peeling. So always use a moisturizing cream or serum after exfoliating. In addition, it is also very important that you protect the skin well against UV radiation. Because your skin is renewing, your skin is very vulnerable, so a good sunscreen with a high factor is essential.
