Use the right products
Blonde hair comes in many types: natural blonde, bleached hair, highlights, ashSi hair, grey hair, and more! So make sure to find products that suit your hair. For example, if you’re looking for a silver shampoo, consider these types:
- Silver shampoo with purple pigment: to neutralise yellow undertones
- Silver shampoo with blue pigment: to neutralise orange undertones
- Silver shampoo with green pigment: to neutralise red undertones
Blue and green shampoos are also often used by brunettes to neutralise unwanted tones. A silver shampoo is Perfect for bleached hair, as warm tones often return. Don’t leave silver shampoo in for too long though. Leaving it on too long can dry out your hair and even cause a purple tint.
Do you have natural blonde hair? Many brands offer special lines for natural blonde hair, such as Schwarzkopf BlondMe, Matrix Hello Blondie or Fudge All Blonde. Want to know more about silver shampoos? Check out these pages: The best silver shampoo and All about silver shampoo.
Give your blonde locks extra love
Your bleached locks have been through chemical treatment, so they need some extra care! A hair mask is key for shiny blonde locks, it’s truly essential. Treating your hair to a mask now and then is always a good idea, but it’s a must for artificial blondes! Bleaching is (yes, still) damaging to your hair, so it needs more nourishment than untreated hair. If you’re about to bleach your hair, it’s important that your hair is in optimal condition. Colour holds better on healthy hair and prevents further damage. Make sure your hair is well hydrated!
Also avoid friction as much as possible, since friction damages your locks. Don’t rub your hair dry — gently pat it instead. Teasing your hair is also not great for it. To prevent friction from your hair and pillowcase at night, a satin or silk pillowcase is highly recommended. This is good for your skin and improves your hair. The smooth texture of satin helps your hair glide over the pillow, keeping your style intact and preventing fast oiliness. It also stops tangling, frizz, and brings out a beautiful shine.
A no-go: never use a blonde Spray. Lightening your hair with a blonde Spray is a bad idea. Blonde Spray keeps working endlessly with no stop. Lemon juice is also harmful to your hair. If you want a natural light colour, opt for a beautiful balayage or babylight treatment instead.
Avoid heat
Limit heat and try to style your hair as little as possible with a heat tool. Always use a heat protection Spray or cream before styling to prevent further hair damage.
Use SPF products
You’ve probably used sunscreen for your skin for years. So why not for your hair? There are SPF products to protect your hair from UV rays, preventing faster colour fading and protecting your hair. A real must! Here are some tips:
Also watch out for chlorinated water. Spending too much time in the pool can turn your beautiful blonde hair green. Pools usually contain a lot of chlorine which dries out your hair. Blonde summer hair doesn’t like chlorine. Both natural blonde and coloured or bleached hair may turn green due to chlorine. How to fix this? Read about it in this blog.
Don’t wash your hair too often
The more often you wash your hair, the faster the fresh colour fades. Wash less often to enjoy your blonde colour longer! Do you get greasy hair quickly? Try a cute bun, a cap, or use a dry shampoo.
Repair bleached hair
What if it’s already “too late” and your blonde locks are dry and dull? Is cutting your hair the only option? It depends on your hair issues. Dry, dull hair can still be treated with a hair mask or by adjusting your washing routine. Try Olaplex, one of the best-known hair repairing treatments. What to do against yellow hair
Sometimes your beautiful bleached hair slowly turns yellow… Very frustrating, right? How do you keep your blonde hair really blonde, not yellow? Especially be careful if you colour your hair yourself. At-home bleaching carries a bigger riSisk than just dyeing your hair brown. Things can go wrong more often, making your hair yellow. Common causes:
- You rinse the dye out too early
- You want to go from dark brown straight to blonde
- Your hair slowly turns yellow over time
In the last case, there’s not much you can do. Whether you bleach your hair at the salon or at home, hair can get yellow over time. This happens because bleaching lightens the hair, but as a result, the hair ‘colours back’ slowly and starts to look yellow. To prevent this, use a hair mask or a hair cream with a high acidity level. To maintain your blonde hair further, use silver shampoo occasionally. This way your colour lasts longer!
