What types of make-up are there for the face?

When you think of face make-up, you probably quickly think of foundation and concealer, but there’s so much more! Below we’ve listed all the products specifically for the face.

  • Primer - The perfect base that ensures your make-up stays put all day!
  • Foundation - Check out all the foundations in all kinds of types, sizes, colors, coverages – and pick your fave!
  • Concealer - Say goodbye to blemishes! Concealers are the way to go. And perfect for highlighting your face a bit.
  • Contour - This emphasizes certain parts of your face, like your cheekbones or jawline.
  • Highlighter - You can add shine as a finishing touch after contouring, for a nice glow or summer look.
  • Blush - A nice color on the cheeks can’t hurt, for a healthy look.
  • Powder - Don’t forget to powder your face to prevent shine and oily skin. This also helps your make-up stay in place better.
  • Make-up spray - Last, but not least: a make-up spray. You apply this last in your make-up routine for a long-lasting look, so your make-up stays well on your face all day.

What types of foundations are there?

Choosing a good foundation in the right color with the right coverage is hard enough, and with so many options, it certainly doesn't get easier. Foundations come in these different variants:

  • Liquid foundation
  • Cream foundation
  • Foundation Sticks
  • Foundation Mousse
  • Powder foundation
  • Compact powder foundation

Curious which foundation suits your skin type? Then check the next question!

Which foundation suits my skin?

Foundation is the base of your makeup look. It evens out the skin and makes it look healthy and radiant. There are many different foundations in all kinds of sizes, textures, colors, and coverages. There are a few things to consider when finding the right foundation for your skin: the shade, your skin condition, and the coverage.

Skin condition - First, determine your skin type. Is your skin oily or dry? This helps you decide which type of foundation suits your skin. We've listed a few factors along with two examples of foundations:

Color tone - One of the most important factors in finding the right foundation is the color. You don’t want your neck or jawline to be a different color than your face. First, there are 3 types of tones:

  • Warm - your skin has a pink undertone
  • Cool - your skin has a yellow undertone
  • Neutral - you’re right in the middle

With neutral skin, you don’t have to pay close attention to the undertone, as you can have either undertone. A tip: when testing a foundation, it’s best to do this on your neck or jawline, not on your hand. Once you know your undertone, you can look at how light or dark your skin is, paying close attention to the difference between your neck and the foundation. If your perfect color isn’t available, you can also mix different foundation colors!

Many foundations already indicate the color you can expect in their name. For example, L'Oreal Paris True Match Foundation an ideal system. L'Oréal has letters in the foundation name: Warm (D/W), Cool (R/C), and Neutral (N). Also, the colors range from light (1) to dark (10). So N1 is, for example, a neutral, light color. Handy!

Coverage - There is also a difference in foundation coverage. Do you have a lot of blemishes? Then it’s best to use a full coverage foundation. If you have fairly even skin, you can go for a transparent or semi-covering foundation for a natural effect.

Which blush suits my skin tone?

A blush gives you a beautiful, healthy flush and accentuates your cheekbones. This color suits your skin tone best:

Blush for a light skin - For light skin, it’s best to choose a light blush with subtle pigmentation, so the blush isn’t too strong or intense.

  • Cool undertone - You should use a light pink color
  • Warm undertone - You should use a peach color

Blush for a medium-toned skin - Do you have medium-toned skin? Then you can actually wear all colors, lucky girl! The best colors to choose from are peach or coral blush. These colors will beautifully highlight your cheekbones.

Blush for dark skin - For darker skin tones, it’s best to choose a dark blush with good pigmentation. A red or fuchsia pink blush are perfect colors for your skin. A blush with a warm undertone looks amazing!

What types of primers are there?

You apply a primer before you start your makeup; it’s a good base. Take a little on your hand and then spread it over your entire face. The primer keeps your makeup in place all day so it doesn’t fade halfway through the day, ideal! A primer can also create a matte effect or a beautiful glow. You can find these primers in our assortment:

  • Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Mattifying Primer - This Primer is a perfect base for your foundation. It has a nourishing formula enriched with SPF 20, plus it gives a Matte finish and evens out the skin.
  • Maybelline Fit Me Luminous + Smooth - This primer makes your skin smooth and supple before you apply your makeup. Highly recommended if you have normal to dry skin! In addition, this primer is enriched with vitamin E and SPF 20.

What is the difference between a tonic and a lotion?

If you wear makeup on your face, it’s important to remove your facial makeup properly. Both a tonic and lotion are meant to remove the last traces of your makeup, but what’s the difference between them? A tonic often contains alcohol and is therefore less suitable for dry and/or sensitive skin. A lotion almost never contains alcohol and is therefore suitable for every skin type, including sensitive skin.

How do you apply facial makeup?

You apply facial makeup with a brush or a beauty sponge. Sometimes you can also apply makeup with your fingers; a little concealer under your eyes works fine with your fingers. But generally, the result on your face looks better if you use the right tools used for facial makeup

In what order do I apply facial makeup?

For the best results, it’s important to apply your makeup in the right order. We’ve described it step-by-step:

  1. Day Cream - start with a good day cream for proper hydration, all day long!
  2. Primer - this keeps your makeup in place all day long.
  3. Concealer - Dab the blemishes on your face and let it absorb for a moment. Then blend it into the skin.
  4. Foundation - time to even out your skin!
  5. Contour - After foundation, you can start contouring. You can use a lighter color (often a concealer) to highlight and a dark powder or stick to accentuate your cheekbones and jawline. Blend everything well into the skin.
  6. Blush - This adds a healthy flush to your face.
  7. Set your face with a light or transparent powder. This mattifies oily skin and helps makeup stay in place. You can choose to apply blush or highlighter under or over the powder.
  8. Highlighter - or bronzer - with this, you can give your face a little extra 'glow' for a nice, summery effect!
  9. Makeup spray - not a must, but handy if you have to be out all day! This helps your makeup stay in place.
  10. Enjoy your awesome look ♡

Is face makeup bad for your skin?

It depends on how you care for your face; it all comes down to good skincare. Always clean your face well, especially before going to bed and before applying your makeup. After cleansing your face, use a moisturizing face cream to keep your skin in good condition. In short: face makeup is fine as long as you cleanse your face before applying it and use a day cream. It is also important to always remove your makeup properly (always before going to bed!) and finish with a night cream. Below we have listed some skincare products for the face:
