Toner, also known as hair toner, is a semi-perManmanent hair colour that neutralises unwanted tones (like yellow) in your hair or adds a specific shade. A toner is perfect after bleaching, but also to add a subtle colour like copper or brown. Toners come in many shades: from silver toner, brown toner to ash blonde toner. Hairdressers often use toners, but toners are also Perfect for home use. Easy, quick and hair-friendly!
What is a toner?
A hair toner is a colour corrector for your hair. It’s not a standard hair dye, but a gentle colour developed to add or neutralise a specific shade in your hair. Think of removing yellow tones after lightening, or enhancing a cool ash blonde shine. Toner formulas usually avoid harsh chemicals, making them softer on your hair.
Toners are popular with blondes aiming for a cool tone, but also with brunettes who want extra warmth or depth in their colour.
What is a toner good for?
A hair toner is truly versatile when it comes to colour:
Semi-perManmanent hair dye
Temporary hair dye
Non-damaging
Neutralises unwanted tones
Softens the transition between regrowth and the rest of your hair
Adds shine to your hair
Adds colour
Gentle on your hair
Less damaging than regular hair dye
Cares for your hair
Suitable for home use
Endless colour possibilities
What’s the difference between hair toner and hair dye?
The biggest difference between a toner and perManmanent hair dye is that toner is much milder and friendlier for your hair than perManmanent hair dye.
Imagine your hair is a sponge. Hair dye is like a strong pigment that fully soaks into the sponge. It changes the colour from within and lasts a long time. Perfect if you want a completely new hair colour, like from blonde to brown or red to black. But... it’s a lot harsher. Your hair has to endure it and can become drier.
Toner on the other hand? It’s more like a colour rinse. It lays a thin layer of colour on the surface of your hair without penetrating deep. It’s gentler, softer and causes no damage. Think of it as a filter over your hair colour: yellow hair turns cooler, copper gains extra vibrance, ash blonde looks fresher. And the best part? If you want something different after a few weeks, it simply fades out. No hassle with regrowth or re-dyeing.
Which toner do I need?
The right toner depends on two things:
The undertone of your current hair colour (e.g. yellow, orange or red)
The colour result you want (e.g. cooler blonde, warm copper, deeper brown)
Is your hair yellowish (after bleaching)?
Choose a purple or silver toner Why? Purple cancels out yellow. This way you get fresh, cool blonde without ‘banana yellow’.
Is your hair orange or coppery?
Choose a blue or ash toner Why? Blue neutralises orange. Perfect for highlights or balayage that turn out too warm.
Want a warm glow (copper, gold, honey)?
Choose a warm toner with red or copper tones Why? This boosts warmth – perfect if you don’t want yellow but do want gold.
Want to refresh or deepen your brown hair?
Choose a brown or mahogany toner Why? Toners add depth, shine and even tone to brown hair. Ideal for highlights, sun fading or dull hair.
Have highlights or balayage and want a more natural look?
Choose a toner that blends your colour with the highlights For example:
Cool toner if you want a Scandinavian finish
Gold/caramel if you want a sun-kissed Glow look
Beige toner for a soft, natural transition
Is toner bad or damaging for your hair?
No worries! Toners aren’t bad for your hair. Most toners are ammonia-free and use a gentle formula. This makes them much less damaging than regular dye. In fact, many toners are enriched with nourishing ingredients like keratin, panthenol or oil extracts. Your hair not only gets better colour but also becomes softer and shinier. Win-win!
How to apply a hair toner?
Wash your hair with a cleansing shampoo (preferably silicone-free)
Towel-dry your hair
Prepare your toner Mix the toner with a corresponding developer if needed. Use the ratio on the packaging (usually one to two). Some toners are ready-to-use and don’t need mixing.
Apply the toner to your hair Put on gloves and section your hair. Apply the toner with a brush or applicator bottle—from roots to ends—or only on areas you want to treat (like highlights or regrowth).
Leave the toner on (check packaging for processing time)
Rinse out!
How long does a toner last?
It depends on several factors, but on average a toner stays visible in your hair for about two to six weeks. This isn’t a fixed guarantee. The exact duration depends on your hair type, how often you wash it, which products you use and how light or porous your hair is. Order your toner at haarspullen.nl!
