babycare tips verzorging

Which babycare is truly the best for your little miracle? Nowadays, there are so many brands and baby products that it can sometimes become too complicated and you think, never mind! I’ll just go for the well-known yellow brand or a store brand from a large drugstore. That’s why we have written a short and informative article for you so that in no time you know what to look out for, what handy tools there are + direct babycare product tips. If you want more in-depth information, we recommend reading part 1 "What to look for when buying babycare".

Tip 1 - Read the label of the baby product

There are an incredible number of types and sizes on the market all claiming to be natural and organic. This makes it very difficult to make the right choice! And we haven’t even mentioned the impossible ingredient lists that are incomprehensible.
Especially if you are already tired, overwhelmed by all the new things and changing circumstances, and perhaps holding a crying baby in your arms. To keep it very simple, there are practical tools you can use when looking for harm-free babycare. The Skin Deep Cosmetics Database is an ideal tool to check ingredients to see if they are harmful or if you get a green light:

Would you like to copy complete ingredient lists and throw them into a machine? Then we recommend this one:

The search function shows results for each ingredient in body care products, so you can choose what is best for your little one. It even lists possible production residues and contaminants related to certain raw materials. This database is an excellent tool to find out what is actually inside, what is not listed on the label.

Tip 2 - Look for recognized certificates on the baby products

If babycare carries the EWG certification, then you know that the products and the brand comply with the health and safety guidelines set by EWG. To obtain an EWG certification, the brand is required to disclose all details of the ingredients used, including those not listed on the label (very small amounts). In addition, the company must be fully transparent and declare that their products contain no carcinogenic substances, hormone disruptors, mutagenic substances, and other synthetic and polluting chemical substances. That’s great!

For babies and children with eczema or extremely sensitive skin, it is important to look for the NEA SEAL OF ACCEPTANCE™ certificate. This is the certificate from national eczema. Babycare products that have received this certificate are suitable for babies and children with eczema or extremely sensitive skin.

Tip 3 - Watch out for allergens and irritating ingredients

Our team recommends avoiding essential oils for children under three years old. They are extracted or distilled from the volatile molecules of aromatic plants. The extracted essence has a high concentration of powerful active ingredients. Some essential oils are rich in very irritating ketones (neurotoxic in high doses) or phenols (anti-infectious molecules).  If you have older children or want to use it for yourself, that is perfectly fine! Then there is no problem.

To prevent allergic reactions, we also recommend avoiding baby and child care products that contain methylchloroisothiazolinone and/or methylisothiazolinone. These are two well-known contact allergens that are nowadays often used as replacements for parabens.

The team of Attitude Living also advises avoiding products that contain perfumes and alcohol, as these can clearly irritate the skin. Furthermore, it is especially important to be cautious with ‘fragrance-free’ products, because they may contain fragrance-masking agents. Then you will see “Parfum-Fragrance” (INCI) on the ingredient list. Read our latest article on this subject for more information.
