Are eyelash serums dangerous? This is what you need to know before you start

Zijn wimperserums gevaarlijk? Dit moet je weten voordat je begint

Eyelash serums are more popular than ever, but the rumors about the risks also cause quite a bit of doubt. Maybe you have seen a video or article about the risks of an eyelash serum. Many people wonder: Does it really work? Is it safe?

In this blog, we tell you everything you need to know about eyelash serums. What they do, whether they are dangerous, what the risks can be, and how to know which serum suits you. Of course, we also share our favorite eyelash serums so you can make a good, safe choice.

What exactly does an eyelash serum do?

An eyelash serum is actually a kind of growth boost for your eyelashes. Most serums contain ingredients that make the eyelash hairs stronger and extend the growth phase. The result? Longer, fuller, and healthier-looking eyelashes. There are roughly two types of serums:

  • Nourishing serums with peptides, biotin, and other gentle ingredients that strengthen and hydrate your eyelashes.

  • Active serums with prostaglandin substances that accelerate the growth of your eyelashes.

Is an eyelash serum dangerous?

Not every eyelash serum is automatically dangerous. Side effects can only occur with active serums that contain prostaglandin analogs. These substances were originally developed as medication for increased eye pressure. In some cases, these substances can cause pigment changes. There are also mild eyelash serums without these ingredients. They often work more slowly but are gentler on your eyes and skin.

What are the risks of eyelash serums?

With some active serums, side effects can occur, especially if your skin or eyes are sensitive. These side effects do not apply to everyone. The possible risks are:

  • Dark discoloration of the skin around the eyes

  • Itching around the eyes

  • Fat loss around the eyes

*With a milder serum (for example, based on peptides), these kinds of risks are rare.

How do you use an eyelash serum safely?

Before you use a serum around your eyes, it is wise to do a patch test first. This way, you can be sure that your skin does not react strongly to the ingredients.

Here’s how: Apply a small amount of serum to the inside of your forearm or wrist and wait 24 hours. If you see no redness, itching, or other irritation, you can safely apply the serum to your lash line as indicated in the instructions. If you notice any reaction – no matter how small – stop immediately and do not use it near your eyes.

Safety first, especially in such a sensitive area as around your eyes.

Checklist: Is this eyelash serum suitable for you?

Unsure which serum suits you? This checklist will help you:

Choose a mild eyelash serum if:

  • You have sensitive eyes
  • You wear contact lenses
  • You want healthier eyelashes, without necessarily growth

Choose a stronger eyelash serum if:

  • You have experience with this type of serums
  • Know that you respond well to it

We recommend these eyelash serums:

We carefully select all our products, and this also applies to eyelash serums. Below is an overview, depending on your choice:

Mild and safe (for sensitive eyes):

Powerful and effective (faster results):

  • Nanolash Eyelash Serum: This serum provides faster results but has a higher chance of side effects due to the ingredient: Ethyl Tafluprostamide. This is a prostaglandin analogue.

  • Lashcode Eyelash Serum: Also contains Ethyl Tafluprostamide, and is therefore classified as an active eyelash serum.

Choose what suits you. And remember: every type of eyelashes is different, so what works for your friend doesn’t always work for you.
