How to sleep best with curls?

Your evening (sleep) routine can be crucial for the quality of your curls the next day. There are several handy tips & tricks to use. But first things first! Are you familiar with the Curly Girl Method? It’s definitely worth checking out this blog. For example, take a look at this list of absolute no-gos from the Curly Girl Method:

  • Shampoo
  • Hairdryer
  • Comb + brush
  • Heat
  • Sulfates
  • Alcohol
  • Silicones on oil-based products
  • Mineral oils and waxes
  • Perfume

At night, there’s a lot of friction between your curls and the pillow. Loose hair causes friction, resulting in frizzy, messy curls. The first tip is: tie up your hair. Don’t use a ‘normal’ hair tie, as that causes dents in your curls. The hair ties from invisibobble are Perfect, meaning they don’t leave marks and keep your curls perfectly in place.

Finally, here are some tips:

  • Use a leave-in product at night to keep your hair soft and smooth.
  • Don’t sleep with wet hair; make sure your hair is completely dry to avoid weird drying patterns.
  • Use a satin or silk pillowcase to prevent friction between your hair and pillow. Friction leads to frizz.
  • Sleep with a satin sleeping cap. This reduces knots and tangles, keeps your hair hydrated, and prevents frizz.

How to refresh your curls in the morning?

You want to see your Perfect curls again when you wake up! This requires a good morning routine for your curls. Here’s a step-by-step guide to doing it right:

Step 1 - The Sition of your curls
First, take out your bun or remove the satin sleeping cap. What’s the Sition of your curls and what do they need to look radiant again? Check by gently shaking your curls. Are they frizzy? Or do they need more hold or volume?

Step 2 - Use a styling product
This depends on what your curls need. The best way is to refresh your hair with a Spray-bottle. This means less contact with your curls and they keep their natural shape. If the product your hair needs isn’t in a Spray-bottle, apply it on the ‘crunch-Manier’. You might want to try these products:

Hold:  Bed Head Tigi Foxy Curls Extreme Curl Mousse (protein-free)

Anti-frizz: Maria Nila Curlicue Cream (protein-free)

Step 3 - The finishing touch
Finally, style your hair as you wish. Use a comb to create volume at the roots (don’t comb through your hair!) or leave it as is! :)

If you follow the CG method and wash-day is in your morning routine, here are some extra tips:

Washing your curls - especially if you have curly hair , it’s crucial to wash your hair as little as possible. Try to wash your hair no more than once or twice a week. Washing can dry out your curls and cause frizz. Is it time to wash? Use the right CG products. To style your curls and add definition, you need the right products. Your curls want:

  • Moisturisers – amino acids & aloe vera
  • Styling gel ingredients - PVP and PVP/VA (water soluble)

These ingredients vary per person, some are a must, others a no-go. You learn by studying your curls through the CG method! Check out this blog about curl types to find out which products are a perfect match for your curls, but for now, here are some must-haves:

How to protect your curls before going outside?

When you go outside in winter weather, your curls take quite a beating. It’s very cold, and there’s often a strong wind. You want to protect your curls as best as possible against these elements, but how do you best shield your curls and keep them in shape all day? Here are some tips that might help you.

If you’re cycling, the wind can be strong, but you don’t want your curls all tangled. So when cycling, wear a hat or tie your curls in a loose bun with a invisibobble hair tie. This keeps your hair together so your curls look much nicer. It also prevents frizz.

Winter weather also makes your curls frizz faster. So it’s important to care for your curls extra well in cold weather. For example, you can apply a serum every morning to keep your curls in place better. Below are some hair serums that prevent your curls from frizzing:

It’s wise to use a leave-in conditioner for your curly hair. This keeps your hair less dry and your curls even more beautiful. It also protects your curls throughout the day. Here are some leave-in conditioners we recommend:

Using lots of vitamins makes your hair stronger. Strong hair breaks less and looks much healthier. This also makes your hair better protected. One thing to absolutely avoid in cold weather is riding your bike with wet hair. You risk your hair freezing. So wait until your hair is dry before heading out, or wash your hair in the evening so you don’t have to worry in the morning.
