Do you notice it too? Hair in the shower drain, on your brush – and not to forget all over the bathroom floor. Autumn has begun! But what does autumn have to do with (extra) hair loss? We asked all questions about this topic to none other than the founder of Neofollics, our number one brand against hair loss.
Maik van den Berg, founder of Neofollics, experienced hair loss years ago. A referral to the skin specialist brought no solution. That was the start of the search for a treatment that could actually do something.
In his own battle with hair loss, Maik discovered that many products on the market claim to have the solution to prevent hair loss. However, many of these products are of poor quality with a low dosage and give insufficient results. An important reason for this is that active ingredients that promote hair growth are expensive, causing many producers to use low concentrations. Pharmaceutical products with proven effects often have serious side effects, which means they are not used long enough.
The lack of honest, effective, and user-friendly means to promote hair growth was the reason for Maik to develop products together with a team of specialists that would meet the needs of millions of people with hair problems. The result is Neofollics Hair Technology.
Alright, let's start! This is what we asked Maik:
Why do you get more hair loss in the autumn?
''Each of the 100,000 to 150,000 individual hairs on the human scalp goes through a cycle of growth and loss that can be influenced by age, stress, condition of the hair follicle, and many other factors. At any given time, about 90% of the hair follicles are in the actively growing or anagen phase, while the remaining 10% are in the telogen phase (or "resting phase"). The hairs in the telogen phase stay there for about two to six months before falling out to make way for the next growth cycle. However, any form of severe physical or emotional stress, such as medication use or the death of a loved one, can lead to temporary hair loss. This is called telogen effluvium, where a larger than normal number of hair follicles enter the telogen phase at once. About two to six months after the trauma that caused the telogen effluvium, all these hairs fall out at the same time, making it seem as if you suffer from widespread hair loss.
Why then more hair loss in autumn? Some scientists speculate that the seasonal trend in hair loss is the result of a similar phenomenon. Harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, which occurs much more in the hot summer months, causes a higher percentage of follicles than usual around July to enter the telogen phase, meaning that around October or November more hairs fall out than average during the year.
Therefore, you experience more hair loss during this period. Your hair does not become thinner during this time; the hairs in the growth phase do not suddenly change in thickness.''
Are there other times of the year when you can get more hair loss?
''Besides extra hair loss in autumn, we also regularly see extra hair loss in spring. This probably has to do with a change in the weather. The sun would also play a role here. Due to UV radiation, the hair follicles enter the resting phase earlier, which can cause extra hair loss.''
Can I fix hair loss in the autumn?
''Fortunately, hair loss due to telogen effluvium is usually only temporary. The hair follicles are not permanently damaged, so if the external cause that caused the condition is short-lived, the hair follicles will eventually return to the growth phase. To speed up this process, it is important to apply a good hair care routine. For example, the Neofollics Shampoo ensures that both the hair and scalp are in good condition, and with the Neofollics Tablets the hair receives the right nutrients to grow healthily. You will notice a decrease in seasonal hair loss and new hair growth within 3 months of using these products.''
Better to prevent than to cure... Can I also prevent hair loss in the autumn?
''Hair loss in autumn can indeed be partly prevented. Besides a healthy hair routine with the Neofollics products, it is wise not to sit too much in the sun during summer. UV radiation has a negative effect on your hair follicle. Wear as much protection as possible in full sun, such as a hat.''
Do you have any tips to prepare the hair for winter?
''As mentioned before, a good hair routine is very important. Due to the colder temperature, it is extra important to give your hair the right care. The hair becomes dry (frizzy) and brittle. With the Neofollics Shampoo and Conditioner you nourish both your hair and your scalp. The latter is very important because a healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth.''
The product lines of Neofollics are developed to solve various hair and scalp problems. Research in recent years has resulted in a number of unique products and the revolutionary hair growth complex: Neoxyl®. This hair growth complex is 41% more effective in stimulating hair growth than Minoxidil.
