You know the feeling… hitting the snooze button one too many times, a rushed morning, and no time left to wash your hair. WWhat now?! Luckily, here’s our lifesaver: dry shampoo! With dry shampoo, oily hair is quickly solved and it gives your hair a refreshing boost. Also super handy if you want to postpone washing or need a refreshing touch. Oily hair disappears in no time and your hair gains more texture. Dry shampoo is also available in all kinds of forms and sizes: powder, foam, spray, and much more. In this blog, we’ll explain everything about our best friend: dry shampoo!

When can I use dry shampoo?

One shampoo focuses on degreasing the hair, while another focuses on both degreasing and adding volume. There are many different types and also multiple functions of dry shampoo. Below you’ll find the different types of dry shampoos, along with a matching dry shampoo:

Dry shampoo for oily hair
Of course, this applies to every dry shampoo and is the main goal number 1! There are many reasons why your hair gets oily quickly, one of which is washing your hair often with a shampoo containing sulfates. Dry shampoo is a quick and simple solution. Powder-form dry shampoo is a good option for absorbing sebum. This will remove the oily part, refreshing your hair again. A dry shampoo with powder is, for example, the Maria Nila Cleansing Powder.

Dry shampoo for texture and volume
Oily hair often hangs flat and weighed down around the face. But even non-oily hair can sometimes look limp and lifeless. Dry shampoo is good for this too. For example, the The Insiders Undone Texturising Dry ShampooThe spray shampoo is specially designed for thin and lifeless hair. Besides absorbing excess oils and impurities, this dry shampoo adds extra body and volume to the hair. If your hair doesn’t quite feel right, dry shampoo might be the solution. A simple bun or ponytail gains more texture for a stylish and voluminous look. For volume, it’s smart to massage the dry shampoo thoroughly into your scalp, which will give your hair more lift from the roots.

Dry shampoo that lets you enjoy colored hair for longer
Every wash brings you one step closer to your next hairdresser appointment - as nice as that is. If you want to enjoy your colored locks a bit longer, you can use a dry shampoo specially for colored hair, like the Goldwell Kerasilk Color Gentle Dry Shampoo. This way, you can skip a wash a little more often!

Dry shampoo adapted to hair color
A dry shampoo with a tint - it exists! Especially for those with dark hair, it’s good to check if your dry shampoo doesn’t leave a white residue. For blondes, that doesn’t matter as much. REF Stockholm has a dry shampoo specially for brunettes: REF Stockholm Dry Shampoo Brown. No more white residue!

Dry shampoo for the nice scent
For example, if you really don’t feel like washing your hair, you can use the dry shampoo of course, just grab some more. It smells wonderful and you can give your look a refreshing touch.

Tip from us!
A tip is to apply your dry shampoo to your hair the night before you go to sleep. Strange, right? But it really works! This gives the dry shampoo more chance to do its job. This way, your hair feels less sticky and hard, and you don’t waste more time in the morning. You wake up with fresh hair, perfect!

How to use dry shampoo?

Now you know what dry shampoo is, but how do you actually use it? Below you will find the three types of dry shampoo and how to use them:

Spray dry shampoo
It is important to shake the dry shampoo well first. Always spray the dry shampoo in the right spot, which is at the roots of the hair. Spray the dry shampoo on the hairline where it is greasy. Then lift the hair in vertical sections to reach the rest of the roots. Spray from a distance of about 20-25 cm.

Powder dry shampoo
You also apply the powder dry shampoo at the roots of the hair. Let it dry for 1 to 2 minutes, then comb through the hair with a comb or your fingers. For the daredevils, you can do it another way: apply a little powder to your hands (be careful not to waste any!), hang your hair upside down, and work your hands over the scalp. This way, your hair hangs looser from the scalp, allowing you to reach the roots well.

Mousse dry shampoo
Using the mousse is very simple. Spray the mousse at the roots of your hair or first in your hands and then at the roots. You can also section your locks; this way, you spray the dry shampoo directly at the roots. Massage it in, let it dry for 1 to 2 minutes, then run your fingers through your hair or use a brush.

How often can I use dry shampoo?

We know dry shampoo is your best friend... but don’t use it for days in a row! If you use it for a long time without washing your hair, your hair follicles can get clogged due to build-up. You definitely don’t want that! The best thing to do is to use dry shampoo about 1 to 2 times. You can do this, for example, between hair washes.

Which dry shampoo is best for colored hair?

The brunettes among us will surely recognize this: the white residue from dry shampoo. Of course, we don’t want that! Fortunately, there are plenty of dry shampoos specially made for colored hair. This way, you not only avoid white residue but also protect the hair color from fading.. That’s why it’s good to know which dry shampoo really suits you! These are good dry shampoos you can use on colored hair:

Which dry shampoo is best for my curls?

Curly Girls know the struggle - curls often need a bit more care than other hair types. If you follow the Curly Girl Method, you undoubtedly check the ingredient lists of all your hair products. As a Curly Girl, you prefer to avoid harmful ingredients that can dry out your curls, for example. We have also carefully reviewed the ingredient list and have a CG-Proof dry shampoo, specially for all curlies: Maria Nila Cleansing Powder(with protein) or the L'Oreal Tecni Art Morning After Dust (without protein). This dry shampoo is super easy to use, making it very easy to style your curls beautifully!

Which dry shampoo should I use to get more volume?

The main goal of a dry shampoo is, of course, to make your hair less oily and clean it. But you can also use dry shampoo to create more volume and texture in your hair. The big difference between a dry shampoo and volume powder is that dry shampoo absorbs oil, while volume powder does not, but there are dry shampoos that combine both. For a volume-boosting dry shampoo, these products are a great choice:

The Insiders Undone Hustler Texturising Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo instantly gives your hair more volume and texture! The dry shampoo makes your hair fresh and clean – while you create your favorite beach look!

Goldwell Ultra Volume Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo is perfect for thin and fine hair. And this dry shampoo is truly a top performer when it comes to volume! Goldwell’s dry shampoo is the golden pearl for mega volume!

Is dry shampoo bad for your hair and scalp?

In principle, dry shampoo is not directly harmful to your hair if you don’t use it every day. Dry shampoo absorbs the oil and natural sebum on your scalp. If you use too much dry shampoo, it could cause irritation or itching.

For example, if you use dry shampoo once between washes, that’s a very good routine. This way, your scalp gets time to breathe in addition to its regular washes. Yeeeheesssss!

Yes, definitely! A big and great plus is, of course, when your shampoo or dry shampoo is free from sulfates and parabens. Sulfates and parabens can irritate the scalp with frequent use. The dry shampoo from REF is a great example of this. This dry shampoo is also vegan and a fantastic refresher! All dry shampoos from Maria Nila are also free from sulfates and parabens. Our bestseller, the TIGI Oh Bee Hive Dry Shampoo, is completely free of sulfates and parabens as well!

Are there dry shampoos with a tint?

Dry shampoos are also available for those with brown hair! Take a look at these:

What is the difference between dry shampoo and volume powder?

When you use dry shampoo, it absorbs the grease. When you use volume powder, these greases are not absorbed. Volume powder also makes your hair much stiffer, so it’s actually more to add texture to your hair. Volume powder is therefore not really meant to postpone washing your hair but more to give your hair a good texture! However, you often get more use out of a can of volume powder than a can of dry shampoo because you only need a tiny bit. So if you want to delay your wash for another day, it’s best to go for a dry shampoo!

What else can I do against greasy hair?

Greasy hair occurs when your scalp produces too much sebum. It’s especially important not to wash your hair too often with sulfates. There are countless reasons why your hair gets greasy quickly – it’s one of the most annoying things you can have. Fortunately, there are solutions! We’ve listed a few for you:

Try not to wash your hair too often
Washing your hair too often makes it get greasy faster. Try not to wash your hair just because it’s your usual wash day, but rather feel when your hair is really dirty and only wash it then to avoid unnecessary washes!

Don’t run your hands through your hair too often
Because you use your hands all day, all the dirt also gets into your hair when you run your hands through it. Try to avoid this as much as possible.

Rinse your shampoo out with cold water
Washing your hair with warm water can increase sebum production, causing your hair to get greasy faster. Rinsing your hair with cold water helps prevent this. Another big plus is that rinsing your hair with cold water also makes your hair super makes it shine beautifully.

Clean your hair tools thoroughly
Try cleaning your straightener, curling iron, and hairbrush once every 2 weeks. This ensures that old dirt doesn’t stay on your products for too long, which can help your hair become greasy less quickly.
