Everything you need to know about hair loss after pregnancy
- 5 min reading time
Unfortunately, it is an inevitable fact: most women experience hair loss after pregnancy. We know, it really sucks. During this special period, hair will not be a priority, but we believe that all women, especially after pregnancy, deserve beautiful locks! So ladies, don’t be sad, because we’re going to give you a helping hand!
What is the cause of hair loss after pregnancy?
Did you know that an average woman loses about 80 to 100 hairs per day? Generally, a woman’s hair cycle consists of 4 phases and it looks like this:
- Growth phase: during this phase, new hair cells form. This lasts on average two to six years.
- The transition phase: in this phase, the hairs reach their maximum length. From this moment, your hair no longer grows. This phase lasts about two weeks.
- The resting phase: the hair stays in the resting phase for about one to three months and then falls out.
- The last phase is the shedding phase, when the hair falls out. On average, a woman loses about 80-100 hairs daily. New hairs grow in the places where hairs fall out, and the whole process starts again.
Each hair has its own cycle, and that is why you lose a certain number of hairs every day (and not all your hair at once ;)).
Moreover, your hormone cycle is a super important factor in this process. For example, if you are menstruating, you may experience more hair loss than usual. As you know, a lot happens with your hormones during and after pregnancy.
During pregnancy, your estrogen levels increase, which causes the growth and resting phases of your hair cycle to be extended. Because you lose less hair, your hair looks thicker and fuller than usual. That seems too good to be true…
..And unfortunately, that is also the case. Your hormones will return to normal levels after your pregnancy, which means the (skipped) shedding phase comes back to life, yay… In other words: all the “extra” hair that grew during your pregnancy will fall out again. And that causes you to experience hair loss after giving birth.
Is hair loss after pregnancy permanent?
No, luckily the hair loss after pregnancy is not permanent. However, it varies per person how much hair loss you experience and how long it takes to stop. In the first 3 months after pregnancy, you will experience the most hair loss.
After about four months, hair loss stops for about 80% of women. Sometimes, unfortunately, it can be a bit more. And in the worst case, it can take up to a year before the hair loss completely stops! This all depends on how long your body needs to bring the hormones back into balance. But fortunately, there are definitely ways to reduce hair loss!
How do I reduce hair loss after pregnancy?
Hair loss is just not nice. That’s why we have worked out a few tips for you that can greatly reduce hair loss, so you can enjoy your old familiar locks again:
- Leave styling tools in the drawer for a while
We keep saying it: heat is not ideal for your hair. So always use a heat protector, before you use a heat styling tool. But if you have hair that is sensitive to hair loss, styling tools are even less ideal. Your hair can get damaged and fall out (even more) because of this. So rather use the Heatless Curling Set to curl your hair and let your hair air dry. :)
- Use the right hair products
When you suffer from hair loss, the type of hair products you use is crucial. We recommend the Hair Growth Shampoo and Conditioner to use Neofollics. These unique hair products are specially developed to stimulate hair growth. Moreover, Neofollics is known Neofollics known for its effective action against hair loss!
- Healthier eating means healthier hair
The quality of your hair can also say a lot about the eating habits you maintain.
It is important to get enough vitamins and minerals, especially after a period of hair loss, such as pregnancy. A varied diet rich in proteins, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats is the best way to get these essential nutrients. This keeps your hair strong and healthy. So grab an apple more often and have a handful of nuts as a snack to improve the health of your locks and your body!
- Go for the extra vitamins
If you have to take care of your newborn baby, it is naturally much harder to get essential vitamins and minerals. That’s why Neofollics has the perfect Hair Growth Tablets developed. These tablets are enriched with biotin, also known as vitamin B8. Biotin is a well-known vitamin that strengthens and promotes the growth of your nails, skin, and hair!
- Give yourself a break
Stress causes more than you might think. This can even be the reason for hair loss! Of course, we completely understand that stress is somewhat part of having a newborn baby, but allow yourself some extra love every now and then <3. Go for a nice walk or visit a café with your girlfriends. Whatever form or size it takes for you: Self care is a real must!
