Deodorant is something we all have in our cabinets and (sports) bags. We often take deodorants everywhere because we don’t want to smell bad all day. But have you ever stopped to think about what kind and type of deodorant you use and what the effects are? This can have a harmful effect on your underarms and sweat glands. That’s why natural deodorants are a new trend - hot and happening. MBut how and what kind of deodorant can you use without causing damage? In this blog, you’ll get all the facts about deodorant and how you can approach it differently!

What kinds of deodorants are there?

Summer is here, the weather is beautiful, it’s hot… and that means sweating. But a good workout can cause it too. Sweating can feel great, it’s even good for you! This natural mechanism cools your body temperature. But we prefer to avoid unpleasant odors. And that’s where deodorant comes in. But what types of deodorants are there actually?

Anti-transpirant - This is the most common deodorant. This deodorant masks the odors of sweating. Anti-transpirant deodorant eliminates the bacteria released with sweat.

Antiperspirant - This deodorant actually stops sweating. It is mainly used to reduce sweat. It does this by blocking the sweat gland openings.

Different types of deodorant

Below are a few more types of deodorant:

  • The spraya spray bottle containing a fragrance. Mainly intended to mask odors. Handy for in between, to quickly get rid of sweat smell.
  • The roll-on: deodorants with a round head that rolls over the skin. You mainly use this before you start sweating.
  • The stick: looks like roll-on deodorant, but it’s not! It’s a solid stick that you apply to the underarm. Convenient, and often has a light fresh scent.
  • The cream: nourishes the skin of the underarms and prevents dryness.
  • The natural deodorant: 100% natural and smells fantastic.

Now that you know the different types of deodorant, we still don't know which is best for our underarms. Read on quickly and discover what natural deodorant is.

What is a natural deodorant?

Our bathroom cabinets and beauty cases seem to be getting greener. Yet, there is still a lot of resistance to ‘natural deodorant’. People say they aren’t effective enough. Still, many brands promise a long-lasting fresh feeling! But what exactly is a natural deodorant? Deodorants can also contain non-natural ingredients like triclosan, phthalates, alcohol, synthetic fragrances, or propellants. Usually, when we say ‘natural’, we mean ingredients of plant origin. In this case, a deodorant that is 100% natural! But is there also a difference between natural and aluminum-free deodorant?

Is there a difference between a natural deodorant and an aluminum-free deodorant?

Yes, definitely! Deodorants generally work to mask odors, not to stop sweating. They contain dozens of ingredients, each with a specific function. Aluminum is one of these. This ingredient blocks the pores in the armpit, disrupting the natural sweating process. More research is needed to determine if aluminum-free deodorants are harmful to people. This is the difference with a natural deodorant:

Aluminum deodorants contain aluminum salts, which means there’s a higher chance of skin irritation, and your clothes can discolor or get damaged. Natural deodorant is becoming increasingly popular. Most people choose this deodorant for health reasons or environmental awareness. Natural deodorants also come in various forms and packaging, so you don’t necessarily have to use a spray or roller—you can use a cream, for example! Plus, the packaging of natural deodorants is environmentally friendly.

What are the pros and cons of a natural deodorant?

Now that we know the difference between aluminum-free and natural deodorants, it’s also interesting to discuss the pros and cons of natural deodorant. Switching from chemical deodorants can be quite a challenge, especially since sweat might start to smell. And that’s understandable; as humans, we often choose the ‘familiar’ path. But is this the safest choice? Changing your deodorant can have a big impact on your body, and we still have our whole lives ahead of us! Additionally, natural deodorants are more environmentally friendly and can be reused, also called ‘refill’. This helps prevent wasting plastic packaging. Kind to the planet and good for your body!

Can I just switch to a natural deodorant?

If your armpits are used to deodorants with aluminum, you’ll notice that your sweat glands need to detox from these ingredients first. The sweat glands have to expel the ‘junk,’ which can come with some odor. Unfortunately! But don’t worry, it’s all for a good cause! In the first two weeks after stopping your current deodorant, you might notice some sweat odors. It takes some perseverance, but after that, sweat production balances out more. In the long term, you’ll also have less ‘moist’ armpits. That’s what we want, right? In the meantime, you can carry refreshing wipes and reapply your natural deodorant stick. Yes!
