Parabens, what’s the story? What are they, and are they good or bad for your hair? You can read all about it here!

Nowadays, we are becoming more aware of the ingredients in our products. There is increasing focus on ‘natural’ ingredients or we pay more attention to harmful substances. So, you may have come across the word ‘parabens’. Everyone has an opinion: some say they are harmless, others say it’s better to avoid them. But what’s the truth? We have looked into some burning questions for you!

What are parabens?

Parabens are used as preservatives. It is a collective name for a group of chemical substances that ensure, for example, that care products last longer. Parabens, or preservatives, extend the shelf life by preventing bacteria, fungi, and/or yeasts.

Why are there parabens in my hair products?

There are two reasons why parabens are in hair products:

  • Hair products with parabens last longer than those without. Your shampoo, gel, or hairspray can therefore last much longer!
  • The risk of allergic reactions on the scalp is lower

Are parabens also dangerous?

It is not scientifically proven whether parabens are dangerous. Opinions on this are strongly divided. The European Union (which researches products with parabens) considers parabens safe. Parties who prefer parabens to disappear from their shampoo dispute the safety because parabens have a weak oestrogen-like effect. Oestrogen plays a role in the development or growth of breast cancer. However, it has been proven that the amount of parabens in products sold is too small to cause the issues mentioned above. These people base their findings on the scientific article by Philippa Darbre published in 2004 in the Journal of Applied Toxicology. The World Health Organization (WHO) also expresses concern about the use of substances called hormone-disrupting substances or Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). According to the WHO, mainly pregnant women and children are vulnerable groups. Any harmful effects of parabens appear only years later, especially regarding fertility.

How do I recognize parabens in hair products?

Often, on the back of a shampoo or conditioner, the ingredient list does not say ‘parabens’ but this collective name is indicated in another way:

  • Methylparaben
  • methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate
  • para-Hydroxybenzoic acid
  • Methylis parahydroxybenzoate
  • E218
  • Ethylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Butylparaben
  • Isoparaben

What can I expect from paraben-free shampoo?

You can expect that a paraben-free shampoo has a higher price tag than what you are used to. You may also notice that paraben-free shampoo foams less, mainly because it contains fewer chemical substances. But don’t worry, your hair will be just as clean! You can also expect that it will not last as long as regular shampoos you might be used to.

Which hair products are free of parabens?

We have listed a few favourites to help you get started! With these products, you are assured of paraben-free products:

What are currently the top 4 paraben-free shampoos?

Are you leaning towards a paraben-free shampoo? Then maybe this will help you make a quick choice:

  1. Chi Argan Oil, this product hydrates your hair very well, makes it shine, and tames frizz. The shampoo is free of parabens and sulfates.
  2. Maria Nila Palett Head & Hair Heal Shampoo, this shampoo is specially made for people with a sensitive scalp and is 100% vegan!
  3. Biosilk is a very good shampoo that cleans well, makes hair shine beautifully, and looks healthy. This shampoo also has a matching conditioner.

Is a paraben-free shampoo also suitable for my hair?

Do you suffer from dry and/or sensitive skin? Then you may benefit from a paraben-free shampoo! This is because these shampoos have a mild cleansing effect. If you quickly get greasy hair, we less often recommend paraben-free shampoos, as these shampoos remove sebum a little less well. Of course, you can always contact our team if you are still unsure! :)
