Everyone knows them, split ends... a nuisance for many people. Split ends cause tangles, hair that won’t hold its shape, and ultimately lead to further breakage. Split ends, natural as they may be, are simply frustrating.
What exactly are split ends?
Split ends are hair tips (the very end of the hair) that have split into two. However, a single strand can be split in multiple places. So, split ends don’t only occur at the tips of your hair, but that is the most common spot. Split ends get in the way of healthy hair, and the worse it gets, the more you’ll notice it in daily life. If you do nothing, the splits will worsen and the overall health of your hair will decline further.
Split ends are a sign that your hair needs care and attention—and preferably sooner rather than later :)
How do split ends form?
Split ends can have various causes; below you’ll find exactly how this works:
Dead ends arise from friction, heat, and chemical agents such as hair dye. Additionally, dry hair is more prone to dead ends.
Split ends from friction – Split ends caused by friction look like this: a hair strand consists of many scales, which are naturally closed. When you wear your hair loose, it rubs against your clothing, coat, or shawl. This causes some hair scales to be forcibly lifted on a micro level. This causes one part of the hair to split from another, and tadaaaa, a dead end.
Split ends from heat – Heat is another cause of broken ends. If you frequently use a straightener, curling iron, or hairdryer, your hair comes into contact with heat every day. Heat is a major cause of split ends. Heat affects the moisture content of your hair. Heat evaporates, as we know. This also happens to our hair. The surface of your hair dries out because the moisture level drops, eventually causing it to tear. You see the same with your skin if you stay too long in the sun, which is why we apply moisturizing lotions and butters. Once a tear forms in your hair, it is eventually pulled apart by another hair strand. And so you get a new split end, unfortunately.
Split ends from chemical agents – Lastly, there are chemical agents. These are used when dyeing hair, think ammonia. Your hair scales are lifted to allow the color to penetrate the hair. However, this happens in a very aggressive way, causing hair scales to break or tear. This ultimately leads to split ends.
How can I prevent split ends?
Prevention is better than cure, so it’s best to prevent split ends. Keep in mind, you can’t completely avoid dead ends, but you can minimize them. Your hair simply needs regular trims. You can delay this by taking good care of your hair and, of course, by following the tips we’ll give shortly :) The time between trims will eventually be longer, and if you want to grow your hair longer, this is an absolute must-read.
Strong hair means your hair wears down less quickly and is less prone to breakage and split ends. Make sure to eat well and healthily, not just filling food ;) Of course, hair vitamins also help with healthy and strong hair. Strong hair also takes time, so really allow a few months and don’t expect results overnight. Good things take time! And let’s be honest, strong, healthy hair is the absolute foundation.
Use a heat protector when using a hairdryer, straightener, or curling iron. It protects your hair from drying out and damage caused by extreme heat. There are all kinds of heat protectors, from a basic version to styling and protection in one.
Always use a conditioner and a leave-in conditioner. (Especially for curly and dry hair, a leave-in conditioner is very important. A leave-in conditioner is the ideal base to further care for or style your hair, as it keeps your hair hydrated!) It cares for and protects your hair from the outside, closing the hair scales, which prevents small tears caused by hair scales catching on other hairs or clothing. You want to prevent split ends, not cause them.
Pat your hair dry instead of rubbing it dry with a towel. If you rub your hair roughly, there is a great chance that hair scales will tear, eventually causing dead ends. To do it perfectly, it’s recommended to dry with a cotton t-shirt or a piece of cotton cloth. The chance of hair scales catching on a soft piece of fabric is much smaller than on a towel.
Do not use hair ties with metal parts, as these are disastrous for your hair. They cause not only split ends but also breakage along the lengths of your hair. A scrunchie, fabric hair tie, or hair tie without metal is the absolute way to go. Also avoid redoing your ponytail 25 times ;) No hair tie at all is best, a hair clip would be an ideal option. If you don’t like the look, use it only at home in the evening on the couch in your loungewear. That saves your hair from another session with a hair tie.
Do not blow-dry your hair when it is soaking wet, as wet hair is more vulnerable than dry hair. Of course, you use a hairdryer to dry your hair, but wait until your hair is towel-dry first. You’ll also finish drying faster, which reduces heat exposure. Double win!
How can I repair split ends?
If you have split ends, you want to repair them. Unfortunately, split ends cannot be rejoined. Once a hair tip has split, the split remains in your hair. Be aware of this, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat your split ends.
Treating dead ends is not about repairing the split part but about minimizing further damage. There are especially serums that are very good at this; serum keeps the split ends held together. This largely prevents further splitting. That’s why a serum is always advisable, even if your hair has just been cut! This prevents most damage to your hair tips.
