This is how you get rid of build-ups in the hair

Dry shampoo, hairspray, gel, wax... all of these can accumulate at the hair roots. Sometimes a shampoo can’t remove it all. This leads to buildup, which can cause itching, limp hair, or redness. In this blog, we’ll explain how to best fix and prevent this!
What is build-up?
First, it’s helpful to know how build-up forms. Build-up is actually a collection of leftover hair products, accumulated sweat and sebum, or substances from outside. This all builds up at your hair roots, causing flakes, skin irritation, and itching. Sometimes you can’t completely remove these buildups with shampoo.
How do you recognize build-up in the hair?
The symptoms of build-up are similar to those of dandruff or a sensitive scalp. If you know you use a lot of styling products or quickly get greasy hair, it might be build-up instead of dandruff. Here’s how to recognize build-up:
- You have an itchy scalp
- You no longer have volume at the roots
- Trouble with flakes
- Your hair keeps feeling greasy
- Dry and dull hair
- The hair feels very limp
- Products no longer work like before
- With curly hair, you have less definition
This is how you get rid of your build-up
You’ve discovered you have build-up and want to do something about it. Your current shampoo can’t handle it, so it’s time for something stronger: a clarifying shampoo. This shampoo deeply cleanses the hair. It’s perfect for removing build-up—but we don’t recommend it for daily use. It’s ideal for keeping your hair clean from all buildup 1-2 times a month!
What kind of products can you use to remove build-up?
A few examples of clarifying products:
- Olaplex Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo
- L'Oréal Serioxyl Clarifying Shampoo (normal hair)
- Joico K-Pak Clarifying Shampoo
- TIGI Down 'N Dirty Clarifying Detox Shampoo
- SexyHair Detox Shampoo
- K18 Prep Detox Shampoo
- American Crew Detox Shampoo (men)
- Schwarzkopf Blond Me Detox Shampoo
- L'Oréal Curl Expression Anti-Build Up Shampoo
How can you prevent build-up?
Build-up is ultimately not good for your hair, so you want to avoid it as much as possible. That’s why it’s important to know how to prevent it:
- Occasionally use a clarifying shampoo to deeply cleanse your hair. This removes all product residue, as we just discussed.
- Use products that are of good quality and don’t easily remain in the hair. There are plenty of products that are also washable, which is ideal!
- Have you washed your hair with a shampoo, conditioner, or hair mask? Then rinse it thoroughly! This reduces the chance of hair product residue staying in your hair.
- Clean your styling tools and hairbrushes after use to prevent flakes or product residue from remaining.
