Everyone is becoming more aware; we all pay more attention to ingredients, look at the conditions of factory workers, and check whether children have not made the products. We are also more conscious of our environment and nature. We watch out for whether products have been tested on animals, and to take it a step further, whether a product is 100% vegan. But what exactly does vegan mean, and when is hair care 100% vegan?
Hair care such as shampoos, hair masks, and conditioners that are fully vegan contain absolutely no ingredients derived from beloved animals. Vegan means that no animal testing has been done to see if certain ingredients are harmful. To be clear: throughout the entire process from development to final product, no animal was involved.
Besides vegan, you nowadays also see many advertisements with 'cruelty free.' Cruelty free means animal testing free in Dutch. So if a shampoo, conditioner, or hair dye states it is cruelty free, it means the product has not been tested on animals to see if it is harmful.
Pay close attention to where products are made; in China, it is mandatory to test on animals, so if a product is made there, you know it is not cruelty free.
This can mean that some lines are produced in the country of origin, but some lines are developed in China. So be careful what you buy if you truly want only vegan products and want to be sure!
This can be confusing, but very often people think that cruelty free hair products are the same as vegan hair care. This is a common mistake made by beginner vegans or people searching for vegan products for the first time.
"Vegan care is always cruelty free. A hair product that is cruelty free is not always vegan!"
It is very common that a certain hair mask has not been tested on animals and they clearly advertise this. However, this does not mean the product contains no animal ingredients. There is a good chance the hair mask contains Panthenol, better known as pro-vitamin B5, which can come from animals. Panthenol can come from plants, animals, or be synthetic. This is not indicated on the ingredient list.
As you can read above, it is a bit more complex, and you cannot immediately tell if a hair product is completely vegan or not. Still, it is good to be aware of ingredients that may come from animals, so you can better avoid these ingredients to be on the safe side. However, these are some ingredients that often occur in hair care; we cannot list a complete list because that would take years and days :) If you want to be 100% sure your product is vegan, check if they are PETA approved! Then you are fully certain.
E-numbers, such as E120 Carmine, which is used to add a red color. Although E-numbers are not always vegan, there is something important you should know. During the development of E-numbers, animal testing is always done. So although an E-number is not vegan, it is by definition not cruelty free! Always avoid E-numbers. E-numbers found in hair care are:
E901 is a common E-number found in styling products; this is white beeswax. Beeswax is an animal ingredient that has also been tested on animals. A double no-go if you want to go vegan.
We have hair care that is fully vegan, and this category is constantly expanding. Especially nowadays, when everyone is becoming more aware, it is becoming easier to bring vegan care to the market. This also makes it more affordable, which is of course very nice.
Vegan products were never known for working well. People wanted to try them, but often stopped quickly because the effect of a shampoo or conditioner was not as it should be. Years later, and now we are here, it is very different. Much research has been done, examined, etc., and now it is very clear. Vegan hair care is no less effective than non-vegan hair care. Even better, it contains many more natural ingredients and is therefore better, healthier, and less harmful than many regular shampoos, masks, and conditioners.
Not choosing vegan hair care because it does not work well is no longer a valid reason :)
You can look at ingredient lists of shampoos to see if certain animal ingredients are not listed. However, many ingredients, such as panthenol, are uncertain whether they are animal-derived or not. Panthenol can come from animals, plants, or be synthetic. Panthenol has huge benefits for hair; it hydrates greatly and has oil-like properties. Not something you want to say no to immediately if it is not necessary. Make it easy for yourself and check if the brand from which you want to buy a hair product is PETA certified. Then you know for sure!
Or if it is explicitly stated on the hair product that it is fully vegan. Then you know you are always safe!
