How to care for your hair in the autumn
- 7 min reading time
It's here, summer is over and autumn is approaching. We swap the lovely sun and tanned legs for wind and rain. But of course also the lovely forest walks, colourful trees and warm hot chocolate! We notice that autumn is back not only from the temperature but also from the condition of our hair. But why is that? And how can I keep my hair looking its best during autumn? Learn it all in this blog!
What does the autumn season do to my hair?
The biggest change for your hair is mainly the cold air outside and the warm air inside. It's not necessarily very cold in autumn, but you quickly turn on the heating inside. The heating causes dry air indoors, which dries out your hair faster. Outside, the humidity is also lower than in summer. Because your hair gets drier, it becomes more prone to static. You may also notice more hair loss in autumn. That's because you have more hair on your scalp in summer. This hair falls out after about three months, meaning: in autumn.
What effects does autumn have on my hair?
Several things can happen to your hair in autumn. We've listed some points so you can quickly see the risks for your locks:
- Frizz
- Hair dries out faster
- Static hair
- Hair breaks more easily
- Flakes
- Split ends

How can I keep my hair healthy during autumn?
We share our best do's and don’ts so you're fully ready for autumn!
DO
Avoid too much heat, like from a hairdryer or styling tools. Heat dries out your hair, while in autumn you want to add more moisture! So always use a heat protector.
DON’T
Don’t wash your hair with hot water. We know, a warm shower feels great on a cold day. But it's better to wash your hair with lukewarm water. Hot water can damage your scalp and dry out your hair. And a big plus, washing with cold water gives you shiny hair!
DO
Trouble with static hair? Spray a little hairspray on your brush and comb through your hair. This helps reduce static. You can also buy a brush with boar bristles. These also help reduce static hair.
DON'T
Speaking of brushes - avoid metal or plastic brushes. Instead, use nylon, wood and/or boar bristle brushes. This also prevents static hair.
DO
Use moisturising products. Think of a hair mask or hair oil. These close your hair cuticles, keeping your hair strong and healthy.
DON'T
Avoid wearing wool, nylon or synthetic fabrics. These make your hair get static more quickly.
DO
Put a bowl of water on the radiator. This increases indoor humidity and helps prevent your hair from drying out too quickly.
DON’T
Since your scalp can be a bit drier in autumn, it tries to compensate by producing more oil. This causes your hair to get greasy faster. Try to avoid washing too often, so it doesn't get greasy even faster.
DO
We get it, when you come home after cycling in the cold, a warm house is all you want. But did you know that heating can cause dry and static hair? So don’t set the heating too high and snuggle under a nice warm blanket. You’ll also save on energy costs!

How do I prevent static hair?
Honestly, we ALL hate it… But luckily, there are several solutions. We share a few:
- Synthetic and wool clothing make your hair static faster. As comfortable as they are, choose a cotton jumper if you often suffer from static hair.
- Emergency and no Haircare at hand? Rub hand cream into your hands, let it absorb, then run your hands through your hair. Static will disappear in no time.
- We know, sometimes you just can't do without these products. But if you want to avoid static hair, better avoid heat tools or set them to the lowest temperature possible.
- Spray hairspray on your scarf or hat before you go outside. This keeps your hair from sticking anywhere and keeps your style looking fresh.
- Hair oil is also truly THE key. It reduces static and is great for your hair.
