Make-up is art - made possible by the accessories! The right brush for blending, a kabuki brush or a beauty blender - what do you use each for? And how often should you clean your brushes? Find all the answers below!
How often should I clean make-up brushes?
Have you been using your make-up brushes for a long time but never cleaned them? Then it’s time for a refresh. Brushes collect bacteria, and you don’t want to spread that on your face. So... put everything aside and make a soapy solution. How often you should clean your brushes depends on how often you use them. If you use them daily, it’s best to clean them right after use. But we get it... sometimes there’s hardly time to do make-up, let alone wash all brushes afterwards! So, if you use your brushes daily, try cleaning them once a week. Or at least once every two weeks or at minimum once a month. That way, you’ll have clean brushes, which is also better for your skin!
How can I clean make-up brushes?
Your make-up brushes are dirty and you want to clean them properly, but how? You can use several things to clean your brushes, such as:
Brush Cleanser - The brush Cleanser provides gentle yet effective cleansing. Wet your brush with the brush cleaner and then wipe it over a tissue to remove the dirt.
Baby shampoo - First fill your sink with lukewarm water and baby shampoo. Swirl your brushes in the mixture and then rinse them with water.
Olive oil - Cleaning your brushes with olive oil not only cleans but also nourishes them. Put some olive oil on a plate and run your brushes through it. Then rinse with water and let them dry for a while.
Lukewarm water - However, you’ll notice that bacteria, powder and make-up residues only loosen with one of the three products above!
You can also use a brush cleaning mat. This mat has different textures to clean your brushes quickly and easily. It usually has suction cups underneath so you can stick it to your sink. Rub your brushes over the mat to get them really clean.
Tip: Wash your brushes before going to bed so they dry properly and are ready for use the next day!
Which make-up brushes do you use for what?
There are so many different make-up brushes, but which one do you use for what? We've listed them all for you:
Foundation - For your foundation, the best is a foundation brush or a beauty blender. A foundation brush has densely packed bristles for full coverage, just like a beauty blender. This helps you blend foundation evenly for a smooth finish. Check out these examples:
Concealer - For your concealer, use a small beauty blender or a concealer brush. A concealer brush is usually very small to precisely cover blemishes. Tips:
Powder - To powder your face afterwards, it’s best to use a large brush. For example, the KASHŌKI Powder Brush is perfect for this.
Bronzer - For bronzer, the best choice is an angled brush, which is easiest for applying bronzer, for example the KASHOKI Blush Brush.
Blush - For blush, choose a bigger fluffy brush that’s slightly angled, similar to the bronzer brush: KASHOKI Blush Brush.
Eye make-up - For eyes, use small brushes. The KASHŌKI Large Shadow Brush is great for applying colour all over the eyelid. Then blend with the KASHŌKI Blending Brush.
Lips - Don’t forget! Sometimes lipstick lines aren’t perfect, but a lip brush gives you more preciSiion! Like the KASHOKI Lip Brush.
We also sell brush sets, so you get all brushes at once!
What is a beauty blender?
Many women are used to applying foundation daily with a foundation brush or fingers, but you can also apply foundation with a beauty blender. A beauty blender is an egg-shaped sponge, also available in many different colours. Larger beauty blenders are for foundation application. Smaller ones are for applying concealer.
Now you know what a beauty blender is, but how do you use it? You wet the sponge first, which makes it expand and creates a larger surface. Then take some foundation onto your palm and press the sponge into it. Next, dab the sponge with foundation onto your face. The sponge helps blend foundation evenly for a natural finish.

What is a kabuki brush?
Many people haven’t heard of a kabuki brush, but once you see it, you know what it is. A kabuki brush has lots of bristles packed tightly together, making it feel wonderfully soft. Because the bristles are so dense, the brush is perfect for applying foundation, cream or powder:
