That's why they are often used for classic looks, like the slick styles of the 50s and 60s. The hold can vary widely, but the shine is usually high, perfect for polished styles. Difference between water-based and oil-based pomade
The popularity of pomades has grown tremendously in recent years. This is clear from the availability of water-based pomades today. Obviously, one is water-based and the other oil-based, but the question is which suits when. Water-based pomades are very easy to wash out, which is a big difference compared to oil-based ones. You can restyle water-based pomade better, often just needing to dampen your strands a little. You also need more of it because it washes out easily.
The traditional pomade is oil-based. Your strands stay put come rain or shine. You might need to run your fingers through your hair to restyle, but it will hold like it did in the morning. This means you’ll have to work harder to wash the oil-based pomade out. You need less of an oil-based pomade since it doesn't wash out as easily. Some always remains in your strands, so the next day you’ll need less. However, this is fine — modern pomades contain many natural oils that nurture your hair. It’s not damaging at all.
