What is a pacifier cord?
A pacifier cord is exactly what the name suggests, a cord that you can attach to a pacifier. It’s an ideal baby accessory because it means you won’t constantly lose the pacifier. It also stops the pacifier from falling on the floor so you don’t have to clean it again.
Is a pacifier cord safe?
Pacifier cords sold in the Netherlands must meet certain safety requirements. This automatically means that the pacifiers we sell in our webshop are safe. The pacifier cords must comply with the European safety standard NEN12586*. Below you’ll find more about what a pacifier cord needs to meet:
The cord of the pacifier cord must be at least 2mm wide, as this affects the strength of the cord.
A pacifier clip attached to a cord must have ventilation holes. These holes must be at least 4mm in size.
Maximum length. According to the NEN-12586 standard, a pacifier cord must never be longer than 22cm without a pacifier clip. Never make a pacifier cord longer yourself.
Although we sell pacifier cords, it remains important to take certain precautions:
Never leave a pacifier cord in the bed with your baby.
Check the condition of the pacifier cord regularly.
Clean a pacifier cord with a lightly damp cloth and lukewarm water. Soaking it in water can affect its lifespan.
Is a pacifier cord really handy?
Nowadays, there are all kinds of inventions for the tiniest babies, and you can literally buy everything for them. You don’t want that, nor is it necessary. Is a pacifier cord really useful? Of course, this differs from parent to parent, but generally speaking, parents are very happy with a pacifier cord. You can clip it on, so you won’t lose the pacifier. You won’t have to keep searching for a loose pacifier that was spit out or simply fell from your son’s or daughter’s mouth. A pacifier cord is also a super sweet and useful gift when you visit someone for a baby shower!♡
Where can I attach a pacifier cord?
For safety reasons, it’s recommended to only attach a pacifier cord to clothing. However, many parents also clip a pacifier cord to a blanket when their son or daughter is in the stroller and they’re close by. You have to realise there’s a choking hazard with a pacifier cord, which is why there’s a maximum length limit. Clipping a pacifier cord to a blanket means more freedom of movement and makes the cord ‘longer’. This is why you need to be careful how you use the pacifier cord. Of course, you can clip it to a blanket when you don’t need it, so you won’t lose the pacifier and cord. However, it’s advised that when in use by your son or daughter, a pacifier cord should only be fastened to clothing.
What are the requirements for a pacifier cord?
You can’t just sell a pacifier cord anywhere in the Netherlands or Europe. Strict rules are in place that a pacifier cord must meet. It must comply with the European safety standards NEN12586* to be sold within Europe.
When do you use a pacifier cord?
A pacifier cord is used when your little one needs their pacifier. This can happen at various times. Pacifiers are mostly used during sleep as an alternative to breastfeeding. That’s when a pacifier cord comes in handy. Bear in mind not to leave the cord with your baby in bed. In that case, don’t use a cord, just the pacifier. During periods of extra sucking need, so when they are awake, a pacifier cord is ideal. If the pacifier is spat out, it stays attached to their shirt, keeping it clean and saving you hours of searching!
What kind of fastenings do pacifier cords have?
Pacifier cords come in all shapes, sizes, and prints. You'll read more below, but there is only one type of fastening. However, the finish varies, making them seem different. Pacifier cords are secured with a metal clip. The finishing of the pacifier cord can differ. On the clip, there is usually a wooden finish, which is round - in various prints and sometimes colours. There are differences here too! You could say the choice is huge ;)
This well-known clip fastening is very easy to use: you open it, grab a piece of fabric (like a jumper), then close the pacifier cord again. The clip fastenings are always made of metal, as they must be sturdy and safe.
What types of pacifier cords are there?
As noted above, pacifier cords come in all kinds of types and lengths. You have shorter and longer versions. There’s also a difference in materials used, here’s a list of types and sizes:

A frequently asked question is whether pacifier cords without clips exist. This is probably related to the fact the clip is made of hard metal, and your little one is still very small and fragile. However, there is always a clip on a pacifier cord, otherwise you can’t easily and safely attach or detach it.
Are there pacifier cords without beads?
You mainly see pacifier cords with beads, which are really beautiful. But they are hard and might feel less comfortable for your newborn. Also, bead cords are heavier than those made from linen, cotton, or other fabrics. Although personalised pacifier cords with names are very popular, there’s also a big trend for pacifier cords made from natural materials, with a name embroidered later. This is often because a favourite comfort object develops, or a lovey. Parents try to use 2-in-1 items as a familiar ritual for bedtime. Little ones also like to fiddle before sleep, so the cloth or cuddle toy provides something to play with. This works perfectly combined with a pacifier. Why not combine the two?
