We all know you need sunscreen to protect your skin, but did you know there is also UV protection for your hair? UVA and UVB rays are harmful to your hair. The sun can dry out your hair, cause it to break more easily, and also fade the hair color. By using the right UV protection, you protect your hair and keep it shining, even when the sun is shining!
Why is the sun harmful to your hair?
The sun emits harmful UVA and UVB rays; we already knew these rays are harmful to your skin and that it is therefore important to use sunscreen (even when the sun is not shining), but did you also know these rays can damage your hair? The UVA and UVB rays penetrate deep into the hair shaft and can lead to dryness, color fading, brittleness, and split ends. Naturally, you want to prevent this, and that is why we offer you the solution with our range of UV protection for hair!
Is it also necessary to protect hair against UVA and UVB rays when the sun is not shining?
It is essential to protect your hair against UVA and UVB rays, even on cloudy days. These harmful rays can still penetrate the atmosphere and damage your hair, so protection is important all year round. Actually, the same rule applies for sunscreen for hair as for ‘normal’ sunscreen you already knew. For sunscreen: always apply, even in winter, and this is the same for UV protection for hair.
What are the effects of UVA and UVB rays on your hair?
UVA rays can penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, causing the hair to dry out, the color to fade, and elasticity to decrease. Because the hair’s elasticity decreases, the chance of hair breakage is greater. UVB rays can damage the outer layer of the hair, which can lead to brittleness, breakage, and a dull appearance.
Is a heat protector for hair the same as a sun protector for hair?
No, a heat protector protects the hair against the heat from styling tools such as a hairdryer or straightener, while a sun protector is specifically designed to protect the hair against the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. We do recommend using both a heat protector and a sunscreen for your hair to protect it. This way, your hair stays healthy, you prevent split ends, and it can grow beautifully and shine!
How do you use a sun protector for hair?
Sun protectors for hair are available in various products: shampoos, conditioners, leave-in products, and hair sprays. Throughout the year, it is nice to choose a product you would normally use in your hair routine and then make sure it also offers protection against UVA and UVB rays. For example, if you always use a leave-in, then choose a leave-in with built-in sun protection. For the lovely summer days, a spray with sun protector is recommended. You can easily reapply this during the day so your hair stays well protected while sunbathing!
Apply the sun protector evenly on dry or damp hair before going out in the sun. Distribute the product evenly through your hair, paying extra attention to the ends. Repeat if necessary during prolonged sun exposure. Additionally, you can use hair care that works as an aftersun. For example, an aftersun shampoo that provides the hair with the right care after it has been exposed to the sun, which is especially a must during the summer months!
How can you protect your hair against the sun, UVA, and UVB rays?
Besides using a sun protector, you can protect your hair by wearing a hat or scarf to block direct sunlight. So go ahead and take that fancy beach hat out of the closet! Try to limit the time you spend in the sun, especially during peak hours. The sun is lovely and vitamin D is healthy for you, but too much sunlight is harmful to your skin and therefore also to your hair.
Is it extra important to protect colored hair against the sun?
Colored hair can be extra sensitive to the harmful effects of the sun. UV rays can break down the pigments in colored hair, causing the color to fade faster. This is of course a great pity after your (often quite costly) hairdresser visit, so use a sun protector specially made for colored hair to maintain the color’s integrity.
