When are hair products Vegan?

Is Vegan also cruelty free?

This is a question we get often. Opinions vary, especially from the brands themselves. Cruelty free (not tested on animals) doesn’t automatically mean Vegan. Cosmetics can be cruelty free but still use animal ingredients. Vegan hair products contain no animal ingredients and are not tested on animals.

What should not be in a Vegan hair product?

Some shampoos contain egg and honey for shine. Also gelatine, beeswax, wool fat (lanolin), carmine, shellac, milk, hyaluronic acid, keratine (found in nails and bones), collagen, sTearine acid, placenta, snail slime, and silk. These are all animal products that can be found in hair products.

Is cruelty free the same as Vegan?

If a shampoo is not tested on animals, that’s a big plus. But cruelty free doesn’t automatically mean Vegan. With the growing demand for Vegan cosmetics, there’s also a need for clarity. How do you know if a shampoo is Vegan?

Although the animal-friendly logo looks cute, some "animal-friendly" hair products still contain animal ingredients hidden under E-numbers we don’t recognise. If you want guaranteed cruelty free products, Vegan products are safe.
