Vitamin A is mainly found in animal products such as meat and dairy, but also in carrots, spinach, bok choy, and butter. Before vitamin A was vitamin A, we spoke of beta-carotene (also found in vegetables). When you ingest this nutrient through your normal diet, several conversion processes take place that convert beta-carotene into the active form retinol, which the body can then use. The active ingredient in vitamin A is retinol acetate, found in the outer layer of the skin. Some nutritional supplements use retinol palmitate, but acetate has a higher activity per mg.
