What is the history of Wella?

The adventure started with Franz Stroher, the founder of the multinational hair brand. This young Man, born in 1854 in Saxony, entered the hairdressing world early. He began as a hairdresser but wanted more. In 1872 he worked and studied in Paris to keep up with the latest trends. This sparked the ambition to start a hair cosmetics company. Initially, it made Tule, the base for wigs. He began his own hair product line, leading to the invention of Tullemoid Waterproof: a technique that lets the scalp breathe. The product line grew quickly. Demand increased, leading to a factory in 1894. In 1898 Franz's sons, Karl and George, joined the hair cosmetics business. In 1924 they registered the patent for Wella, marking the start of the Wella hair empire. Wella products evolved daily. In 1927, they launched a line for permanent waves. In 1930, Wella developed a portable perm and a hairdryer with a built-in motor. Large scale production started in 1945. By 1950, the workforce expanded as the hair industry recovered. In 1957, Wella opened its official Research Centre, leading to more innovations. The success of Wella products kept growing.
In 1972 Wella expanded into retail, allowing consumers to buy hair products. From 1974, they began developing hair colour. In 1988, the first demi-permanent colour was introduced.
