How do you best protect your hair this summer against sun, sea, and pool water?

The sun is finally out again, temperatures are rising, and your bikini is ready. Lovely, those summer vibes! But have you thought about your hair? Because as nice as sun, sea and pool are for your mood, they're a bit less kind to your hair.
In summer, your hair takes quite a beating. UV rays lighten your hair’s pigment, salt from the sea draws out moisture, and chlorine from the pool strips the natural oils from your scalp. The result? Dry, frizz-free, brittle and lifeless hair that’s hard to style. Luckily, a few Simple tricks can prevent a lot of damage. Here’s how to keep your hair happy this summer!
1. Be smart with sea and pool water
Of course, cooling off in the water is great. But your hair sees it differently. Salt and chlorine can dry out your hair, making it dull, frizzy or stiff. Your hair colour can also fade faster through lots of sun and water. Thankfully, you can easily protect your hair:
-
Keep your hair as dry as possible with a bun or braid above water.
-
Swimming anyway? Apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil beforehand. This helps seal the hair cuticles, so salt and chlorine have less grip.
-
Rinse your hair with clean water after swimming to remove salt or chlorine residues.
2. Wear a hat or scarf against sun damage
Sun is lovely, but your hair doesn’t always appreciate it. UV rays can dry out your hair, make it frizzy and cause your hair colour to fade faster. Luckily, you don’t have to avoid the sun to keep your hair looking good:
-
Make a braid or bun with a satin scrunchie so less hair is exposed to the sun.
-
Wear a hat, cap or scarf for extra shade and protection of your hair and colour.
-
Optionally, use a hair product with UV protection to help prevent dryness from the sun.
3. Avoid chemical treatments in summer
Colouring, perManent or other chemical treatments can make your hair extra vulnerable during summer. Combined with sun, sea and pool water, your hair dries out faster and may break or get damaged quicker. So plan intenSive treatments before or after summer months to keep your hair stronger and healthier.
-
Postpone bleaching or intenSive colouring during hot summer weeks.
-
Give your hair extra care with hydrating masks and nourishing products.
-
Just had a treatment? Then protect your hair extra well against sun and chlorine.
4. Use hair products with a UV filter
Just like your skin, your hair needs sun protection too. Opt for shampoo, conditioner or leave-in with a UV filter. Bonus: many of these products also help repair already damaged hair.
5. Nourish your hair from within
What you eat shows in your hair. So maintain a varied diet with enough vitamins. Especially vitamins A, B, C and E are important for strong, shiny hair.
-
Vitamin A: carrots, dairy, eggs
-
Vitamin B: meat, fish, eggs, yoghurt
-
Vitamin C: peppers, kiwi, strawberries, citrus
-
Vitamin E: nuts, seeds, vegetable oil, green vegetables
Also drink plenty of water to keep your hair (and yourself) hydrated!
6. Don’t forget your scalp
If you part your hair and don’t wear a hat, your scalp can burn badly. So apply a little sunscreen. Yes, it takes getting used to, but it’s much better than flaking and itching later.
Ready for a summer full of healthy hair?
With the right care, your hair gets through summer much better. By protecting your locks well from sun, sea and chlorine, you prevent dryness, frizz and colour fading. Small changes, like using a leave-in or shielding your hair with a hat, already make a big difference. This way your hair stays healthy, soft and radiant even on warm days.
