You have probably experienced it before: an unwanted green tint in the hair. This can have several different causes. Fortunately, there are also a number of ways to remove the green tint from your hair or to prevent it. Do you want to never have to deal with a green tint in your hair again? Then quickly read all the tips below!

How does a green tint in the hair occur?

A green tint in the hair has several causes:

Swimming pool water
If you go swimming in a pool, there is a chance that a green tint will appear. Many beauty lovers think that this green tint is caused by the chlorine, but this is not the case. The green tint is actually caused by the copper in the water. Copper can get into the water through the copper pipes the water runs through or through algae treatments.

Showering
Not only the pipes that carry the pool water can contain copper, but also the pipes in your home. The copper in the water attaches itself to the proteins in the hair. So if you never swim but still have a green tint in your hair, this could be the case for you.

Hair dyeing
A green tint after dyeing… Many people who have bleached their hair and then go darker experience this. When you bleach your hair, the pigments are gradually removed from the hair. If you then dye the hair darker again with, for example, light brown or dark brown color, there is a chance your hair will get a green tint. This is due to the green pigments contained in the dye. If you apply one of these colors to unpigmented hair, the color may shift. This happens because the complementary color of the shifted color has been removed from the hair during bleaching.

How do you get a green tint out of the hair?

If you have gotten that unwanted green tint in your hair, of course you want to get rid of it as soon as possible. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions for this:

Anti-dandruff shampoo
An anti-dandruff shampoo is a strong shampoo that can 'strip' the hair. With an anti-dandruff shampoo, you fade the hair color, including the green tint. However, not only the green tint fades, but also your desired hair color. So be aware of this before you start. View all anti-dandruff shampoos here

Ketchup
Believe it or not, but ketchup removes the green tint from your hair! The red pigments in ketchup neutralize the green shades in the hair. Make sure to spread the ketchup well over the hair and then cover it with aluminum foil. Leave it on for about 20 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. After the treatment, your hair may appear slightly darker, but don’t worry because that will wash out again.

Semi-permanent coloring or rinse
Using a semi-permanent coloring or rinse with a red pigment temporarily neutralizes the green tint in the hair. If you have no experience with color rinses, you can always ask your hairdresser for advice. View all color refreshers here.

How do I prevent a green tint in the hair?

The best thing of all is, of course, to simply prevent that green tint. Fortunately, this is possible if you pay attention to a few things listed below:

Swim cap
Maybe not the most charming way, but the easiest: a swim cap. This way your hair does not come into contact with the water and you won’t get a green tint, but you can still enjoy swimming.

Conditioner
Is the swim cap not really your thing? Then use conditioner before swimming. If you use a silicone-based conditioner before swimming, a protective layer is formed around your hair. The silicones create a layer around your hair that protects it from the copper. Make sure to wet your hair before applying the conditioner and then tie it up. This way you are fully ready to swim without getting a green tint afterwards! View all conditioners here. Our favorite is the Schwarzkopf Sun Protect Prep Spritz.

Shampoo
Has your hair already been in contact with the pool water? Then wash your hair immediately after swimming with a shampoo. This way the water does not have the chance to penetrate further into the hair. View all shampoos here.

Pre-pigmentation
If you are going to dye your hair again after bleaching it, it is best to pre-pigment your hair first with a rinse that contains red pigments. The green color in the dye is then neutralized by the red tones in the rinse.
