Deodorant - our lifesaver on sweaty days or when you don’t have time to shower. Deodorant isn’t the first thing we think of when it comes to skincare. Yet it’s a product you might use just as often as a day or night cream. While you probably choose your day cream carefully based on your skin type, you should do the same with deodorant. A deodorant can irritate your skin quite a bit, especially if you have sensitive skin or just shaved. You may have experienced irritating underarms or excessive sweating. Many deodorants contain ingredients like parabens, aluminum, and alcohol – ingredients your skin would rather avoid! But there are plenty of deodorants that are skin-friendly and actually reduce sweating.

How important is a good deodorant?

First of all: you use deodorant daily or even several times a day. For this reason alone, it’s worth choosing a deodorant that is hardly or not harmful to your skin. Investing in a good deodorant can be important for two different reasons:

  1. If you suffer from excessive sweating, a good deodorant can really make a difference and be the solution to your 'problem'.
  2. Many deodorants contain harmful ingredients, such as aluminum salts. Harmful substances can not only irritate your skin and clog your sweat glands but also disrupt your body’s temperature regulation.

Which deodorant is suitable for sensitive skin?

For sensitive skin, it’s important (just like with any other skincare product) to avoid harmful and drying ingredients. It’s best to choose a natural deodorant free from parabens, aluminum salts, alcohol, and perfume. It also works well if you pick a deodorant enriched with nourishing ingredients. The Deodorants from Attitude are great for sensitive skin!

How does deodorant work?

Some deodorants only have a pleasant scent to mask sweat odor. And this works fine for some, as long as you don’t have much trouble with sweat odor. Many deodorants actually reduce sweat. Ingredients that absorb moisture prevent bacteria from multiplying. This keeps the underarm simply too dry for bacteria. Sweat itself has no smell; it only develops odor when bacteria come into play.

What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

In the Netherlands, almost everything is generally called ‘deodorant.’ But there is a difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant. Simply put, deodorant doesn’t stop sweating itself but targets the bacteria that cause odor, while the pleasant scent masks unpleasant smells. Antiperspirant contains ingredients that actually reduce sweat production. Antiperspirant is perfect if you suffer from excessive sweating. But deodorant also works really well!

Which deodorant can I use for excessive sweating?

If you suffer from excessive sweating, it’s best to choose an antiperspirant. An antiperspirant blocks sweat production. However, in the Netherlands, almost everything is simply called 'deodorant,' even if it has an antiperspirant function. So be sure to check the description and packaging carefully.

How do I recognize sensitive skin under my arms?

Maybe you’ve noticed your underarms are irritated, or you only experience it after shaving. Wondering if the skin under your arms is sensitive and if you should consider a different deodorant? Here’s a checklist:

  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Flaking
  • Itchy feeling
  • Burning sensation
  • Bumps

Which ingredients are harmful under the arms?

Many deodorants contain harmful ingredients. To keep it clear, we’ve listed the most common harmful ingredients for you:

  • Parabens: also listed as: methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butyl parabens.
  • Aluminum: many deodorants contain aluminum salts, which provide the antiperspirant effect and absorb moisture. The biggest downside of aluminum is that your skin absorbs it so well that the ingredient enters the bloodstream. This has worrying consequences for the body.
  • Propylene glycol
  • Propellant gas (in spray deodorants)
  • Alcohol
  • Perfume (this doesn’t mean it can’t have a scent; perfume can also be natural, provided this is stated! In most cases, they specify the individual ingredient rather than a general umbrella term like perfume)
  • Triclosan
