You hear it everywhere: “Ideal for dry skin” and “Suitable for dehydrated skin.” You might think they are just the same words in a different form. We want to let you know now: that is not the case! ;) Perhaps you always thought you had dehydrated skin or were convinced your skin is dry, but what exactly is the difference?

In this blog, you will find out what these terms mean and what you can best use for them. And who knows: maybe you will find the skincare products that are perfect for your unique skin!

What is the meaning of dehydrated skin?

The meaning of dehydrated skin is literally in the name: this skin lacks moisture. It can occur in anyone because it is a skin condition. Moreover, when lacking moisture, the skin can feel both oily and dry. This skin condition comes and goes because the moisture deficiency depends on certain factors. This can be related to how healthy you eat and the environment you are often in. For convenience, we have summarized all the points:

  • Dehydrated skin lacks moisture
  • Is a skin condition
  • Can occur in anyone
  • Can feel both oily and dry
  • Comes and goes
  • Depends on diet, skincare, and environment

What does dry skin lack?

Dry skin is not a skin condition, but a skin type. You can be born with it. When you have dry skin, you lack fats. This causes the skin to retain moisture less easily and therefore feel dry. Just like with dehydrated skin, the environment can influence dry skin. For example, if it is very cold, if there is a temperature change, or if your skin is exposed to the sun for a long time, the skin can feel even drier. In short, these are the characteristics of dry skin:

  • Is a skin type
  • Genetically determined, so you are born with it
  • Lacks fat
  • Feels dry all over the body, including hands and scalp
  • Is sensitive to premature aging
  • Does not go away, but you can reduce it
  • Depends on environmental factors

What is the difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin?

The difference between a dry skin and a dehydrated skin is actually very simple. First of all, dry skin is genetically determined, while dehydrated skin can occur in anyone. Secondly, dry skin always feels dry, but dehydrated skin can feel both dry and oily. Moreover, dry skin lacks sebum, in other words fat, which means it retains moisture less effectively. Dehydrated skin struggles to retain moisture due to factors like diet, environment, and how you treat your skin.

How do I make sure my skin is not dehydrated but full of moisture?

Now that you know dehydrated skin can be saved, of course you are curious what you should do! Fortunately, there are many things you can do to add moisture back to dehydrated skin. And no: water does not help. At least, drinking more water does not fully restore the skin.

A must when treating dehydrated skin is to properly protect the skin barrier. Examples of this are vitamin C and niacinamide, but also ceramides. Ceramides are naturally produced in the skin, but dehydrated skin needs a little more. The brand CeraVe specializes in this. This unique skincare brand adds essential ceramides to each of their products: ceramide 1, 3, and 6-II. They also include niacinamide in all their skincare products. And for that extra vitamin C: have a nice piece of vegetable or fruit a few times a day!

How do I best deal with dry skin?

Unfortunately, dry skin cannot be prevented. However, you can maintain it well, which at least reduces the dryness. Something we recommend for daily use is to use a day cream. CeraVe Face Cream SPF30 is a real must here.

The best thing you can do for your dry skin in terms of treatment is to use a

restorative and nourishing mask. We recommend COSRX Overnight Spa Mask to purchase. This night mask hydrates intensively and can also be used as a rich cream! Use the mask at least 2 times a week. Relax, watch your favorite series and give your dry skin a hydration boost. Secretly not a punishment, right? ;)

5 tips to protect and perfect

Whether you have dry or dehydrated skin: some things you just have to avoid. Here we have listed a few important tips so you can optimally care for and protect your skin

  1. Use lukewarm water when showering and washing your face
  2. Gently pat the skin dry with a towel (instead of rubbing)
  3. Avoid skincare products with irritating substances, such as sulfates and silicones
  4. Watch how much you expose your skin to the sun (and use always a SPF)
  5. Try to eat as healthy as possible. We know, going out for a nice meal or sitting on a terrace is hard to miss, but make sure you eat at least 2 pieces of vegetables or fruit a day. All for the vitamins! ;)
