Skincare – it’s totally trendy. Just a day cream is no longer enough nowadays, SPF is a must, and a serum certainly doesn’t hurt. Nowadays there are so many facial products: cleanser, toner, serum, SPF, lotion, and much more. Have you lost track of the best order to use these products? We explain step by step how to best apply your skincare routine for flawless skin!

The best order to apply your skincare

Below is the correct skincare routine order split into day and night:

Step 1: Cleansing

The skincare routine naturally starts with cleansing from your face. This is super important both morning and night! Speaking of important: don’t forget never to remove your makeup and wash your face properly before using other products. It’s best to avoid makeup wipes, as they often dry out your skin; people with sensitive skin will especially notice this. But what is the best way to indeed use?

Waterproof makeup is best removed with an oil-based cleansing product. This dissolves all makeup (including waterproof) without making your skin greasy. Then use a gentle, creamy, foaming cleanser, like the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser. This method of cleansing, also called double cleansing, is especially beneficial for people with oily to combination skin or acne-prone skin!

Use suitable cleansing products that match your skin type

Cleanse your skin every day

✔ Wash your face with lukewarm water

✖  Avoid makeup wipes

✖  Do not cleanse your face with hot water

✖  Don’t go to sleep with makeup on

Step 2: Toner

After removing your makeup and cleansing your skin with a cleanser, it's time to use a toner. A toner has multiple functions, including restoring the natural pH balance of your skin and removing the last remaining traces of dirt and makeup. Even if you have just cleansed your skin, you will still find some dirt residues on the cotton pad after using the toner. Your skin will look more even and smoother after use, and the toner also ensures better absorption of all products applied afterward. Moreover, it gives a wonderful refreshment to your skin! Use the toner after cleansing, both in the morning and in the evening.

Step 3: Serum

A face serum is a super concentrated and hydrating formula that specifically targets a certain skin type or skin problem. Often you have them in your cabinet without knowing what to do with them, or you even skip them entirely. Not anymore! They are actually one of the most important products in your skincare routine. A serum brings your skin to an optimally healthy and hydrated state, making the rest of your skincare routine much more effective. But what is the difference between a toner and a serum? A toner is mainly intended to balance your skin's pH level and remove the last traces of dirt. A serum is an extra hydrating step that gives your skin a boost for the next products in your skincare routine. You cannot replace one with the other, as they are two completely different skincare products with their own functions. Below, we also explain which serum you should use at which time!

In the morning: Vitamin C, your skin can really benefit from it! For vitality and a beautiful glow, Vitamin C is highly recommended. It protects your skin against inflammation and damage caused by free radicals throughout the day. Additionally, it also brightens the skin. Keep in mind that it has a strong effect. Do you have sensitive skin? Then it's better to use the serum in the morning instead of daily. In our range, for example, you can find the Nanoil Vitamin C Face Serum.

In the evening: In the evening, it is best to go for a serum with hyaluronic acid. The serum draws water from the air and lets it absorb into the skin to keep your skin plump and hydrated while you sleep.

Step 4: Eye cream or serum

Eye creams is a light, thin cream that you apply before your other creams and oils, such as day cream. Apply a small amount of eye cream with a gentle tapping motion on the eye contours. Eye serums generally have anti-aging properties that help keep the skin around your eyes looking youthful, and they also help delay the appearance of wrinkles!

Step 5: Face cream or moisturizer

There are many different choices in face creams. For example, there are face creams for dry skin, against aging, or a vitamin C cream. Day creams often contain a good SPF to protect your skin from UV damage. Night creams naturally do not need SPF but are often extra hydrating. This is because your skin is more likely to dry out while you sleep. Night creams also often contain retinol, an ingredient that works better in the evening hours. Night creams with retinol are often too greasy and heavy to wear during the day.

Properly hydrate the skin

✔ Choose a face cream or moisturizer that suits your skin type

Step 6: Sunscreen

The last step of the skincare routine, but certainly not dispensable: SPF! Why? Sunscreen protects your face like armor against the outside world. The absolute minimum SPF you need on your face is SPF30. This prevents premature aging, worsened scars, and an increased risk of skin cancer. If your day cream does not contain SPF, it is absolutely a must to apply sunscreen afterwards. This completes the skincare routine, and your skin is ready for the day!

✔ Use SPF all year round

Other skincare options:

The above skincare routine is actually the 'everyday routine'. Because you don’t use a scrub or mask daily, these are not included in the skincare routine above. Still, it’s good to use these two products occasionally for healthy, radiant skin! Read more about them below:

Step 7: Scrub

Every day your skin loses thousands of skin cells; this is a natural process. But when these dead skin cells accumulate on the skin, your skin suddenly looks much less radiant. With the scrubbing dead skin cells are removed from your face and you ensure that the sebaceous glands clog less quickly, so you have fewer problems with impurities.

However, do not scrub or exfoliate your skin too often, unless the packaging states that it is so mild it is suitable for daily use. Generally, it is said that you should not scrub your skin more than twice a week. This varies per skin type and also depends on your age. The cell cycle of older skin usually lasts longer than 28 days, so this skin can be scrubbed or exfoliated more often than younger skin.

Step 8: Mask

After you have exfoliated your face, you can apply a mask apply to give your skin an extra boost. Masks contain concentrated ingredients that, especially after exfoliating, can penetrate deep into your skin. They nourish and soothe your skin, stimulate new cell growth, or remove impurities, depending on the mask. You usually use a mask about once or twice a week.
