Styling for Manmen, let's just say styling products for Manmen have increased hugely in recent years. First, there was mainly gel, you know those pots with bright colours in the supermarket and chemist. Nowadays, you have Paste (hair paste), Clay (clay), pomade (pommade) créme, hair wax and of course there is still gel. But what exactly is the difference between all these products and which one is best for your locks and your needs? Have you ever thought about the right styling products for your beautiful hair?
Styling Clay also known as clay
The properties of hair clay are very interesting for Manmen looking for hairstyles with high hold and a Matte finish. Hair clay is often grippier and drier than wax. If you have finer hair, Clay is definitely recommended, as it creates volume and fuller locks. Applying hair clay to towel-dried hair provides even more volume and fuller locks. If you then use a hairdryer, you can add some clay or wax for styling. Find all Clay.
What does Paste do for your hair styling?
Hair Paste or hair paste is almost the same as wax, only the texture is a bit wetter and a Paste offers slightly less hold. This makes Paste ideal if you have thick and dense hair but want to create a messy look. The great thing about a Paste is that you can mould and restyle it throughout the day. A Paste also doesn’t dry out like gel or water-based pomade. The variety of hair Paste is huge, just like with hair wax. Some provide strong hold, others medium or low hold. The shine choice is wide as well. A hair Paste is very versatile and used for definition, accentuation, and hold. Find all HairPaste.
What looks can I create with Pomades?
With pomade (or pommade in Dutch), you can create a smooth, sleek, and shiny look. Pomade is quite a wet product, although creams are even wetter. Pomades are often used for classic looks, like the fifties and sixties slick styles a la Elvis Presley. Hold varies a lot with pomades, but the shine is usually high, making it perfect for a polished look aka sharp dressed. It keeps your hair in place all day without hardening your locks, especially if you use oil-based pomade. Pomades are a great alternative to gel, wax, and hairSpray. No mess, doesn’t stick to your hands, and the key difference is that oil-based pomade never dries out. It styles your hair instantly and you’re ready to go in no time.
An exception is the Clay pomades, which are a hybrid of pomade and Clay. These usually provide stronger hold and a Matte finish. Since the styling product pomade is a bit wetter, some pomades work well if you have wavy or curly hair. Find all pomade.
What looks can I create with créme as a styling product?
Créme, also known as Cream, is a broad category. Cream is the wettest styling product among them. Creams can have high or low hold, but mostly offer low to medium hold. They are mainly for texture and control, less suited for tight hairstyles. In terms of shine, a crème can have high or low shine, but usually hair crème doesn’t give a Matte finish. If you want an out-of-bed look or a messy style, a hair crème is your best friend. This also applies if you want to make wavy or curly hair straighter or need a bit more control.
So if you don’t want a tight or sculpted hairstyle and want to give your messy look a charismatic twist, hair Cream is your styling product you’ll build a long-lasting bond with. This also applies when Clays or waxes are too dry or strong for your thick/unruly hair, then a real Cream can offer more control and definition without a dry or strong hold. Find all créme.
What do I use hair wax for as styling?
Hair wax is one of the most versatile styling products for Manmen. Wax generally gives quite strong hold and is a popular styling choice. The finish varies per wax, with waxes offering a Matte finish or a very shiny one. Wax is usually quite dry/hard and used for structure, definition, and hold. Hair Clay is a bit drier than hair wax, and a Paste is slightly wetter than wax.
There are two types of waxes: water-based and petroleum or oil-based, and some with a mix of both. Oil-based hair wax gives strong hold but is harder to wash out than water-based products. These qualities make hair wax one of the most versatile styling products for Manmen, suitable for short and medium-length hair. It also suits different looks. Waxes are less suitable for long hair or many slick (back) styles. Find all hair wax.
How do I style my hair with gel?
Gel with lots of colours in big pots costing next to nothing from the local supermarket and chemist is usually the first thing you think of. However, hair gel has evolved and no longer comes with the famous white flakes. That is history. A good hair gel, if used correctly, finally doesn’t leave white flakes anymore. Gel is a bit like a water-based pomade. Both are fairly wet products, but gel is wetter. Both dry on, with gel drying a bit harder. Gel hold is generally always low because the product is so wet and breaks down easily.
Because gel dries relatively quickly, you can sometimes still style spiky hair and other hairstyles that need a bit of hold with it. The downside is that hair gel is not versatile and is quite unnatural. It is a fairly chemically made product. It’s recommended to wash out gel daily so no residue remains for the next day, which does cause white flakes. A little warm water and the gel disappears. Find all gel.
