Sunscreen is important when you're spending hours in the sun. You want to use sunscreen that isn't carcinogenic or contains hormone disruptors. It's often thought that direct sun exposure is unhealthy, but this couldn't be further from the truth. The point is that too much sun is unhealthy. A beautiful tan is actually the sign that you need to get out of the sun because you've been out in it too long. This is your body's natural protection and signal to you. But we all keep happily sunbathing, and that's precisely what's unhealthy. The sun itself isn't; we need it, and so do our little ones. If you do apply sunscreen, which sunscreen is best for your little one? Read on!

Why should I choose mineral sunscreen?

Non-nano mineral sunscreen is the safest option among sunscreens. These are free of carcinogenic ingredients and hormone disruptors. They are also free of nano-ingredients. If you prefer a Kruidvat brand that is free of these, it's advisable to check the rest of the ingredients list to ensure it doesn't contain synthetic perfumes and other unusual ingredients. One thing doesn't always mean the other. If you want to order now and get the best option, you're in the right place with a sunscreen from Attitude, Naïf, or Shampoobars. These are free of harmful ingredients and are natural. Do you also want a sunscreen that is plastic-free, doesn't harm marine life, and is a green choice? Then Shampoobars is a great brand. Contrary to what the name suggests, this brand offers everything in the area of personal care without plastic or harmful substances!

What is the difference between natural and chemical sunscreen?

It's important to use the most natural sunscreen possible for your little one. Especially when they're so young, your baby absorbs more because their skin isn't fully developed and closed yet. It's therefore crucial that you're well-informed so you really know the difference. We're going to help you with that now :)

Chemical sunscreens contain two chemical filters: oxybenzone and octinoxate. These two filters penetrate the skin and absorb UV radiation. In this way, they protect the skin from the sun, but they can damage the skin and cause irritation.

Natural sunscreen uses mineral filters, which are chemical-free and sit on top of the skin instead of penetrating it. This reflects UV rays, protecting your skin without leaving any harmful effects.

Why should I choose a Non-nano sunscreen?

Sunscreens with mineral filters were long unpopular because they left a white cast. Then came a new technology, nanotechnology. This technique reduces the particles so small that they no longer leave a white cast, making the sunscreen more effective in protecting against UV radiation. However, nanotechnology is not without harmful effects; the particles become so small that they can penetrate (damaged) skin and enter the body. As a solution, micro- or particle-coated sunscreens are encased in a protective silica or aluminum oxide layer. This, in turn, is carcinogenic if inhaled or if they penetrate your skin. Something you want to avoid at all costs.

That's why it's important to always check if the label says "non-nano." You don't want nanoparticles on or around your body. Prevention is better than cure.

What is the most natural sunscreen I can use on my baby/child?

Now, Attitude goes a step further and commissions independent research into natural ingredients that could potentially be irritating or harmful. Attitude Sunly Sunscreen SPF30 Plastic Free .

Is there a sunscreen without parabens?

This is a frequently asked question, and it's wonderful to see everyone becoming so critical. The sunscreens we sell from Attitude and Naïf are all paraben-free. Parabens are often used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics and personal care products, but while they do extend the shelf life, they're still harmful to us. Something you obviously don't want, especially not for your little one. Want to know more about parabens, the hows and whys? Then we recommend reading the article "Everything you need to know about parabens ."

Which sunscreen is environmentally friendly and does not harm coral?

Perhaps you want to take things a step further and not only ensure the safety of your baby/child, but also consider the environment. That's possible, and you're not alone. The Attitude team also thinks this is important, as they've launched a nano-free, mineral-based, and natural sunscreen! In other words, all their sunscreens are nano-free, mineral-based, and natural! So it doesn't matter which one you choose :) This Coral Reef Sunscreen is free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), which is what you want. You want to avoid these ingredients because they're not only harmful to us but can also damage coral. A no-go!
