You know the feeling… hitting snooze too many times, a rushed morning, and no time to wash your hair. What now?! Luckily, there’s our life saver: dry shampoo! Dry shampoo quickly fixes greasy hair and gives your hair a refreshing lift. It’s perfect to postpone washing or to freshen up your look. Greasy hair disappears in no time and your hair gains more texture. Dry shampoo comes in many types: powder, foam, Spray and much more. In this blog, we’ll tell you all about our best friend: dry shampoo!

When can I use dry shampoo?

Some shampoos focus on degreasing hair, others add volume on top of that. There are many types and functions of dry shampoo. Below you’ll find different dry shampoos along with suitable options:

Dry shampoo for greasy hair
This is the main goal of any dry shampoo! Many factors cause greasy hair, one is washing your hair too often with shampoos containing sulphates. Dry shampoo is a quick and easy solutionSi. Powder dry shampoo is great at absorbing sebum. This removes the greasy parts and refreshes your hair. For example, try the  Maria Nila CleanSing Powder.

Dry shampoo for texture and volume
Greasy hair often hangs flat and weighed down by the face. But non-greasy hair can also look limp and lifeless. Dry shampoo helps here too. For example, the the insiders Undone TexturiSing Dry Shampoo. The Spray shampoo is designed for thin, lifeless hair. Along with absorbing excess oils and impurities, it adds body and volume. If your hair doesn’t feel quite right, dry shampoo might be the fix. A simple bun or ponytail gains more texture for a stylish, voluminous look. For volume, massage the dry shampoo well into your scalp—it lifts hair from the roots for fuller volume.

Dry shampoo to make colour last longer
Every wash brings you closer to your next salon visit—no matter how lovely that is. To enjoy your coloured locks longer, use dry shampoo specially made for coloured hair, like the Goldwell KeraSilk Color Gentle Dry Shampoo. That way, you can skip washing more often!

Dry shampoo matched to hair colour
Dry shampoo with a tint—it’s real! Especially for dark hair, it’s worth checking your dry shampoo doesn’t leave white residue. For blondes, it matters less. REF Stockholm offers a dry shampoo designed for brunettes: REF Stockholm Dry Shampoo Brown. No white haze anymore!

Dry shampoo for a lovely scent
Even if you don’t feel like washing your hair, you can grab dry shampoo for a fresh scent and a refreshed look.

Our tip!
Try applying dry shampoo the night before you go to bed. Sounds odd? But it works! This gives it more time to do its magic. Your hair won’t feel sticky or hard in the morning, and you save time. You’ll wake up with fresh hair—perfect!

How do you use dry shampoo?

Now you know what dry shampoo is, but how do you actually use it? Below are the three types of dry shampoo and how to use them:

Spray dry shampoo
Shake the dry shampoo well first. Apply the dry shampoo in the right place—at the roots. Spray the dry shampoo where your hair is greasy. Lift the hair in vertical sections to reach the rest of the scalp. Hold the spray about 20-25 cm away.

Powder dry shampoo
Apply powder dry shampoo to your roots. Let it dry for 1-2 minutes, then comb or run your fingers through your hair. For daredevils, try this method: put some powder on your hands (careful not to waste any), tilt your head upside down, and rub your hands over your scalp. Hair hangs looser this way, so you can reach the roots well.

Mousse dry shampoo
Using mousse is very easy. Apply the mousse to your roots or first in your hands, then on the roots. You can also section your hair and apply dry shampoo directly at the roots section by section. Massage it in, let it dry for 1 to 2 minutes, then finger-comb or brush through.

How often can I use dry shampoo?

We know dry shampoo is your best friend... but don’t use it for several days straight! Using dry shampoo too often without washing clogs hair follicles from build-up. You want to avoid that! The best is to use dry shampoo about once or twice. You can do this between washes.

Which dry shampoo is best for coloured hair?

Brunettes will recognise this: dry shampoo’s white residue. Nobody wants that! Luckily, there are plenty of dry shampoos for coloured hair. They not only prevent white residue but also protect colour from fading. It’s good to know which dry shampoo suits you! Here are good options for coloured hair:

Which dry shampoo is best for my curls?

Curly girls know the struggle—curls often need extra care compared to other hair types. If you follow the Curly Girl Method, you probably check ingredients lists of your hair products. As a Curly Girl, you avoid harmful ingredients that can dry out your curls. We’ve checked too and have a CG-proof dry shampoo specially for curls: Maria Nila CleanSing Powder (with protein) or L'Oreal Tecni Art Morning After Dust (without protein). This dry shampoo is super easy to use and helps style your curls beautifully!

If you have curls but don’t know the Curly Girl Method, we recommend reading our detailed article about it: The Curly Girl Method from A to Z

Which dry shampoo is best for extra volume?

The main purpose of dry shampoo is, of course, to reduce greasiness and cleanse your hair. But it can also create extra volume and texture. The big difference between dry shampoo and volume powder: dry shampoo absorbs oil while volume powder doesn’t. Some dry shampoos combine both. For volume-boosting dry shampoo, try these:

the insiders Undone Hustler TexturiSing Dry Shampoo

Goldwell Ultra Volume Dry Shampoo

Is dry shampoo bad for your hair and scalp?

Generally, dry shampoo isn’t harmful if you don’t use it daily. It absorbs oil and natural sebum on your scalp. Using too much might cause irritation or itching.

Using dry shampoo once between washes is a good routine. It gives your scalp time to breathe besides normal washing. Yeeeheesssss!

What’s the difference between dry shampoo and volume powder?

Dry shampoo absorbs oil, while volume powder does not. Volume powder makes hair much stiffer, so it's more about adding texture. Volume powder isn’t really meant to postpone washing but to give your hair a good texture! Usually, you get more use from a can of volume powder than dry shampoo because you only need a tiny amount. If you want to skip washing a day longer, go for dry shampoo!

What else can I do against greasy hair?

Greasy hair happens when your scalp produces too much sebum. The most important thing is not to wash your hair too often with sulphates. Many reasons cause greasy hair—it’s one of the most annoying things. Luckily, there are solutions! Here are a few for you:

Try not to wash your hair too often
Washing your hair frequently makes it get greasy faster. Don’t wash just because it’s wash day—listen to your hair and wash only when it’s really dirty to avoid unnecessary washes!

Don’t run your hands through your hair too often
Using your hands all day transfers dirt to your hair. Try to avoid this as much as possible.

Rinse shampoo with cold water
Washing hair with warm water can increase sebum production, causing quick greasiness. Rinse with cold water to prevent this. A big plus: cold water also makes hair shine beautifully.

Clean your hair tools regularly
Clean your straightener, curling iron, and brush every two weeks. This removes old dirt from your tools so it doesn’t stick to your hair products and cause faster greasiness.
