Blog BIBS

As a mother, you naturally want the best for your little one, especially when it comes to care products. One of the most popular choices when it comes to pacifiers is the well-known BIBS pacifiers. But what exactly are BIBS pacifiers, and why are they so popular? Today we will answer all your questions about BIBS pacifiers, from the different sizes and types to how to clean and use them. So, let’s go! Momma Bear ♡

What are BIBS pacifiers?

BIBS pacifiers are beautiful pacifiers made from natural rubber with the nicest styles and prints. So no more boring pacifiers, that has been the case since BIBS past tense - and that’s why this Danish brand also made such a flying start. They are not only super practical, because pacifiers of course are - they are beautiful to look at and great to style with all kinds of outfits and of course all your baby stuff. ♡ The natural rubber was also really an invention when the brand was launched. It is a natural material which is obviously great for your son or daughter, and it is also much softer and more flexible than silicone. In addition, the pacifiers are free from harmful substances, such as BPA and phthalates, which gives parents peace of mind.

What sizes of pacifiers does BIBS have?

BIBS pacifiers come in three different sizes, below we tell you more about the sizes and when you might use them. However, we also recommend really looking at your little one, because he or she might need a different size due to the shape of the mouth. A pacifier is, of course, a replacement for the nipple, and the nipple has one size - it doesn’t grow. Finding the right size pacifier is not always easy.  Below is also an experience from one of our colleagues, Hannah-Esther Kwakman:

“Our son just couldn’t find a comfortable pacifier, and breastfeeding didn’t go smoothly at first - which was new for us. Our son is actually our third child. It turned out to be due to the shape of our son’s mouth. His lip tie and tongue tie had to be lasered. Because in his first 9 months in the womb and 5 weeks on earth he couldn’t properly get his tongue against his palate - his palate was high and no longer ‘flattened’. Because of this, we had to use size 3 BIBS pacifiers so that no air was ‘gulped’. We are glad we went to the lactation consultant, and that there are BIBS pacifiers in size 3. "That’s why you can see that, although sizes of pacifiers often fit well as standard - there are still enough situations where it’s different - and that makes sense.”

  1. Size 1 (0-6 months)This pacifier is suitable for most situations for newborns and young babies. The design is compact and ideal for their small mouths.

  2. Size 2 (6-18 months): Usually for older babies who need more suction power, size 2 is an excellent choice. This pacifier offers extra support for their growing needs.

  3. Size 3 (18 months and older): This size is designed for toddlers and older children who need a larger pacifier. It is important to choose the right size to prevent your child from using the pacifier incorrectly.

What types of BIBS pacifiers are there?

BIBS naturally has a huge range of pacifiers, often the choice between colors and prints is the time-consuming aspect. BIBS sells 3 different shapes of pacifiers and these are:

  • BIBS cherry-shaped Pacifiers - best-selling shape, this shape is completely round, and because of this it is generally easily accepted by babies.
  • BIBS Anatomical Pacifiers - these pacifiers have a curved top which promotes the placement of the tongue and sucking technique where the sides of the tongue form around the pacifier, just like with breastfeeding. Because of the slanted tip, your son or daughter doesn't have to suck as hard as on a round pacifier to flatten the pacifier in his or her mouth.
  • BIBS - Symmetrical Pacifiers - have a drop shape that is quite flat. This way your little one doesn't have to press the pacifier flat in the mouth to suck. The suction force is therefore lower with symmetrical pacifiers.

Now that we know this, let's move on to the most fun part, the collections that BIBS has released over the years ♡

The types of pacifiers you can encounter include:

BIBS Colour: This is the most popular pacifier, available in all kinds of colors that can follow the season. BIBS Colour pacifiers are only made with natural rubber. And these are available in cherry shape, anatomical, and symmetrical. Colour can be further divided into the following lines:

  • BIBS x Liberty - these are pacifiers with floral print
  • BIBS Studio Collection - these are pacifiers with a super fun stripe pattern in all kinds of colors
  • BIBS GLOW in the Dark Pacifiers - these are the pacifiers for nighttime. Nighttime searches for the pacifier

BIBS De Lux: These pacifiers come in various cheerful colors and are perfect to emphasize your baby's personal style.

BIBS Couture: These pacifiers have a luxurious look and are ideal for parents looking for something special.

BIBS Boheme - these pacifiers have more flair thanks to the boho design with the nicest colors. Of course with a natural rubber nipple.

BIBS Infinity - these are pacifiers that help keep the mouth less moist. These pacifiers are made of silicone.

BIBS Supreme - these are pacifiers with a wide shield. They are silicone pacifiers with holes on both sides that ensure minimal contact with your little one’s sensitive & delicate skin. This prevents moisture buildup.

Which BIBS pacifiers can I choose for breastfeeding?

If you are breastfeeding, it is important to choose a pacifier that does not disrupt your baby’s sucking technique. The BIBS cherry-shaped pacifier is recommended by health professionals in Denmark. This shape is recommended because the tongue rolls around the pacifier, just like it does during breastfeeding. If your little one has trouble with breastfeeding, a pacifier can help with the correct sucking technique, as it trains the muscles in the jaw and mouth while keeping the sucking technique the same as with breastfeeding ♡

In other words, the cherry-shaped pacifier is the best choice for breastfeeding, precisely because it mimics the natural sucking motion. You want to avoid nipple confusion as much as possible, and this is the best solution.

Which BIBS pacifier is the best?

The best BIBS pacifier depends entirely on your baby’s needs. What works great for one, might not work at all for another baby. This is because the mouth anatomy is very different; every baby is different. And yes, sometimes that can be frustrating, because for most babies one works, but for your baby it doesn’t. Generally, the BIBS BIBS Colour + cherry-shaped pacifiers are considered the best option because of their shape and the variety of colors and patterns. It is important to choose the right size and type of pacifier that fits the sucking behavior of your little son or daughter.

How do I clean BIBS pacifiers?

Cleaning is an essential part of pacifier care, especially because it often comes into contact with saliva. Reusing must be done hygienically. Here are some tips that you will probably find useful:

  1. Daily cleaning: Rinse the pacifier with warm water after each use.
  2. Weekly boiled water: Pour boiled water over the pacifier weekly to kill bacteria.
  3. Replace: Regularly check for wear and replace the pacifier when necessary. (4-6 weeks)

How do I boil a BIBS pacifier?

Although it is always recommended to boil pacifiers, this does not apply to BIBS Pacifiers. In fact, it is discouraged! Why? BIBS pacifiers are made of natural rubber and boiling damages the pacifier. Other pacifiers, on which this advice was originally based, were all silicone pacifiers. But no stress, you can use boiled water to pour over the pacifier, this kills all bacteria on the BIBS Pacifier - and that’s exactly the moral of the story ;)

How do I sterilize a BIBS pacifier?

Sterilizing BIBS pacifiers is only possible with silicone BIBS pacifiers, and therefore not the natural rubber variant! The following advice only applies to Silicone BIBS pacifiers:

  1. Steam sterilizer: You can use an electric steam sterilizer, which is an effective and quick way to sterilize the pacifiers.

  2. Microwave sterilizer: The BIBS Storage boxes are suitable for this.

  3. Boiling method: As mentioned earlier, you can also boil the pacifiers in water.

However, this should only be done the first time if the BIBS pacifier is new and made of silicone. So not made of natural rubber!

You clean the natural rubber BIBS pacifiers by pouring boiling water over the pacifier while it is in a colander. Then let the pacifier cool down and make sure no water remains inside the pacifier; you don’t want your little one to have a burned mouth!

How long can I use the BIBS pacifiers?

Pacifiers are a real item that needs to be replaced regularly. However, it is a shame to replace them too quickly if it is not necessary, as that is a waste of money. The fun part about replacing pacifiers is that you can switch between colors and prints! Make sure to replace the pacifier on time to prevent wear. Changing it every 4-6 weeks is recommended, as natural rubber also expands with use – meaning the pacifier becomes bigger. This can be less comfortable for your son or daughter.

Are BIBS pacifiers good?

This is a frequently asked question, especially after the round BIBS pacifier was often discussed in the summer of 2023. According to a pediatrician, the round shape of the BIBS pacifier could affect jaw development. Natural rubber naturally expands over time, meaning the nipple becomes larger – this can cause a child to start breathing through their mouth. The development of a lisp could also be a possibility.

However, if you use the round pacifier safely and replace it every 4-6 weeks, there is nothing to worry about. That is also the advice from BIBS itself.

Pacifiers are, of course, an alternative to the mother's nipple, and babies have a sucking need that should be met naturally when they can breastfeed, sleep, etc. However, this is often not the case, and the pacifier is offered as an alternative. Especially if your little one cannot breastfeed, a pacifier is often a must. ♡

Are pacifiers actually bad for the teeth?

When pacifiers are used properly, there is no reason to believe that BIBS pacifiers are bad for your little one’s teeth. However, it is important to wean off the pacifier in time, as prolonged use can lead to dental problems or a weaker tongue. Make sure to replace the pacifier regularly and pay attention to your child’s teeth development.

Help! BIBS pacifier expands, what now?

BIBS pacifiers are made of natural rubber, which means they can expand over time. And yes, this usually happens. This is completely normal and is due to use and exposure to temperature. Keep a close eye on the pacifier and replace it if you notice it losing its shape, in other words, if it becomes larger. That is also not comfortable for your son or daughter. The advice is to replace the pacifier every 4 - 6 weeks.

Why choose a BIBS pacifier size 1?

BIBS pacifiers in size 1 are most commonly used for newborns and babies up to about 6 months. This is generally the case. These size pacifiers are small and light, making it easy for your little one to suck. However, we always recommend looking at your little one’s needs; as a mom, you know what is best for him or her. And if you notice that size 1 doesn’t fit quite right, you should definitely look further. The age linked to size 1 is a guideline, but not a definitive answer.

Why choose a BIBS pacifier size 2?

Size 2 is designed for older babies between 6 and 18 months. This pacifier offers more support and is ideal for children who have developed a stronger sucking motion. It also helps promote healthy mouth development. However, size 2 may not be the right one for your son or daughter. Therefore, watch how he or she responds and still try size 1 or size 3.

Why choose a BIBS pacifier size 3?

BIBS Pacifier size 3 is suitable for toddlers and children from 18 months. This pacifier offers a larger and wider sucking surface, which helps with the development of their mouth and teeth. It is important to gradually wean off the pacifier at this age. It is indeed possible that younger children also use size 3; again, this is more of a guideline.

Are there BIBS pacifiers without a ring?

Yes, BIBS also offers pacifiers without a ring. These are found in the BIBS Supreme line and the BIBS Infinity. These pacifiers are ideal for children who do not need a ring but still want to enjoy the comfort of a pacifier. They are easy to use and stay well in the mouth. The reason a mother chooses a pacifier without a ring can vary greatly; here are a few examples:

  • Benefits for breastfeeding – no ring against the breast
  • Less disturbance during sleep – no large ring getting in the way
  • Think they look nicer

BIBS pacifier without shipping costs

Pacifiers are not very expensive, but shipping costs often make the total cost add up. Pacifiers are consumables, which means this is a recurring item for your little one. One reason we offer them is that they can be nicely ordered together with your other household items for the whole family. From shampoos, breastfeeding products to toothpaste – because we offer free shipping from 35 euro, you won’t pay shipping costs and get a good deal. ♡

Do I need to boil the BIBS pacifier before use?

No, boiling BIBS pacifiers is absolutely not recommended – this is because they are made of natural rubber. What you can do is pour boiled water over the pacifier while it is, for example, in a colander. Do you have a BIBS pacifier made of silicone? Then you can boil it for the first time, but to preserve the pacifier, they advise against further boiling. Afterwards, you can rinse the pacifiers daily with hot water (let cool well) or clean thoroughly with warm water.

Also, especially if your baby is still very young, you can pour boiled water over the pacifier daily.

Why does my BIBS pacifier smell like rubber?

If you notice your BIBS pacifier smells like rubber, this is completely normal. BIBS pacifiers are made of natural rubber and may have a slight rubbery smell. This usually disappears as you clean and use the pacifier more often. It also tastes like natural rubber; most babies don’t mind this. If they do, you can try a silicone pacifier, which, although harder, is odorless and tasteless.

Are there also BIBS pacifiers with print?

Of course, BIBS also has pacifiers with different prints. These pacifiers are not only practical but also super fun to look at! An ideal finishing touch for your little boy’s or girl’s outfits. Below you will find a number of BIBS Pacifiers with print, categorized by style! Will you choose a more neutral pacifier, a cool one, or go for a cute design?

What about pacifiers and breastfeeding?

As mentioned earlier, BIBS pacifiers are an excellent choice for breastfeeding because they support your baby's sucking technique. Using a BIBS pacifier can help maintain a good breastfeeding routine and help your baby get used to the pacifier without compromising breastfeeding.

Below we have some tips you should better take into account:

  • Wait to give your baby a pacifier until he or she can breastfeed well. There should be no nipple-pacifier confusion.
  • A round pacifier resembles the shape of a nipple a bit more, and therefore the classic cherry shape is the most suitable.

How many pacifiers do I actually need?

Of course, we could simply say that one set is enough, but it is a practical item that is used a lot. For that reason, you might want to take an extra box as a stock, because you don't want to be without a pacifier. What is very practical and easy, and also done by dads and moms, is the following:

  • A pacifier in the co-sleeper
  • A pacifier in the living room for daytime
  • Attaching a pacifier to the stroller with a pacifier clip
  • A pacifier in the diaper bag
  • A pacifier as a spare

Or if you are very organized, you can of course manage with 1 or 2 pacifiers and take them everywhere. It just depends on what you find practical and what fits your daily family life. ♡ We really like giving tips and pointing out the possibilities, so you can make a well-informed choice that best suits your current situation. There is no better expert on your family than yourselves ♡
