Abyssinian oil is an oil produced from the Crambe abyssinica crop, a more branched, annual-growing oilseed plant in the Brassicaceae family. The seed is highly sought after due to its high erucic acid content and is mainly used for cosmetic purposes. The plant Crambe abyssinica originated in East Africa in the Ethiopian highlands known as Abyssinia, from which it got its name. However, in recent years it has also been grown as a spring crop in the Mediterranean region of Southern Europe and is also a major crop for South Africa. It has a short growth cycle of 90 to 100 days and does not require as much water to grow as other plants, making it an environmentally friendly crop to produce. Amazing, right?! Abyssinian oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, proteins and minerals.
