Vegan hair care is becoming more and more common these days, and we think that's fantastic! Vegan hair care helps you make the world a bit more beautiful again. The good thing is that it is becoming more and more common, and therefore also more affordable. Rather than being the exception, it is increasingly becoming the norm, and that makes us happy!

      When are hair products vegan?

The real vegan ladies know when a hair product is vegan, but a very large group do not yet. However, there is an ever-growing group that is becoming more conscious in life. Because what exactly is vegan? Most of the popular and well-known hair products that are easy to find in the supermarket are not vegan. Vegan hair products are shampoos, conditioners and styling products that do not contain any ingredients that come from animals and are also not tested on animals.

      When is a product vegan?

Vegan hair products have been popular among our customers for a long time. People are becoming increasingly aware of the suffering caused to animals when testing products. Fortunately, more and more brands are recognizing this and are finding other testing methods for their products.

Few characteristics that make a product vegan:

      • For example, panthenol, amino acids, vitamin B are substances that can be of animal origin.
      • Keratin, a popular ingredient in many hair treatments, is an animal protein found in the skin, beak, feathers, hooves, claws and baleen.
      • Vegan hair products are not tested on animals.

Which ingredients are animal-friendly in origin?

      • Beeswax (cera alba)/ honey (mel)
      • Animal Glycerin
      • Wool grease (lanol/lanolin/lanolate)
      • Carmine/ CI75470
      • Lactic acid
      • Keratin
      • collagen
      • elastin
      • Silk
      • Glycerin
      • Vitamins

Fortunately, many brands already make it a bit easier for us by stating on their label if their product is 100% vegan. These brands often consciously choose to be vegan and want to clearly communicate this to the outside world. Brands put this on their product themselves or can be recognized by the well-known vegan logo.

      Is vegan also cruelty free?

This is a question we get regularly. Opinions differ on this, especially from the eyes of the brands themselves. Care products that are cruelty-free (ie not tested on animals) do not have to be vegan. Cosmetics can be cruelty free, but still not vegan because they use animal substances in their products. Vegan hair products contain no animal ingredients and are not tested on animals.

Which products on hair supplies are vegan?

Attitude Living is a vegan and cruelty free brand that is also completely harmful free. They are officially PETA CERTIFIED. In addition, they have everything independently tested and they also work together with dermatologists. This brand has become a family brand that goes for the 100% safe products. L'OREAL SOURCE products are 80 to 100% natural and also vegan. All products contain the natural formula and are made on a natural basis. It contains almost only natural ingredients, and you would think that is not possible, but L'Oréal source is transparent so everything can be read on the packaging. This packaging also makes the line sustainable. L'Oréal has made sure that you get the maximum amount of the product with the minimum amount of plastic packaging. The packaging is also made in such a way that you can easily take it with you. And the products do not contain sulfates, parabens, silicones and synthetic fragrances and dyes. So very good for the environment!

What does not belong in a Vegan hair product?

Some shampoos contain egg and honey for shine to the hair. Also gelatin, beeswax, wool fat (lanolin), carmine, shellac, milk, hyaluronic acid, keratin (found in nails and bones), collagen, stearic acid, placenta, snail mucus and silk. These are all animal products that can be in hair products.

      Is cruelty free also vegan?

If a shampoo has not been tested on animals, that is already a big plus. But not tested on animals, cruelty free, is not automatically vegan. Due to the increasing demand for vegan cosmetics, there is also more demand for clarity. Because how do you know which shampoo is vegan?

While the animal-friendly logo looks cute, animal-friendly hair products can still contain animal ingredients. Sometimes these are hidden under E numbers that we do not immediately recognize. Are you looking for cruelty-free products? Then you know for sure that you are safe with vegan products.

What animal ingredients can be in hair products?

Animal ingredients are used in many hair products. Keratin, for example, is a very popular ingredient that is mainly used in products for damaged hair. Keratin is an important building block of your hair that makes it strong and resilient. But Keratin is an animal protein that occurs in, among other things, the skin, beak, hooves and claws of animals and is therefore not vegan.
